Learn from my mistake plus Platinum Roadside Assistance experience

With the tire off some sanding and a repaint with Wurth Silver Wheel Paint should hide most of that.

Best,

Yesterday I loaded the bike in my pickup and took it to Haps for my appointment. They called the number I gave them for the authorization and referenced the claim number I provided. There was some disagreement on the cost of the tire. Haps sold it for $200 and said that was below their actual cost. They would only authorize $180. I said fine and the work was done. The repair order came to a total of $265.18 which I paid in full. The total authorization given to Haps was for $241.87. I loaded the bike back up and returned home with both documents in hand.

A quick search for my tire online confirmed $200 was a very fair cost. Road 5 GT R180/55ZR17
The damaged tire only had 220 miles on it and was just a few months old and also cost $200 when installed previously.

I just logged into the web portal at
https://nationsafedrivers.com/login-page/Member

and logged in with the claim number and access code provided on the authorization. I uploaded a copy of the repair order. Now we will see how long it takes to get the check.

My only gripe thus far is I think they should have authorized the full $250 max instead of $241.87. The process has been painless though and communication has been fine.

I called them to verify that was the max payout for that tire. They have a database based on SKU numbers for the tires and wholesale costs. The max payout for my size was in fact $179.99. Oh well.

They are supposed to replace the tire up to a certain amount, not use their formula for replacement cost which didn't cover up to the limit they set for replacement.

As such, you're incurring more cost that the plan suggests. More bad press for bmw's roadside assistance/tire replacement program :dunno

I had a good experience with BMWMOA Platinum

Just 'sayin. I broke down on the state line of FL/GA in middle of the Okefenokee Swamp. Where I rolled to a stop a sign said "Welcome to Georgia" and the one on the other side of the road said "Welcome to Florida." It was 4 PM on a Saturday afternoon. It was a miracle I even had cell service but I called the Roadside assistance number and a truck rolled up about 90 minutes later. The driver drove 42 miles to get me and then 72 miles to my house. It was 41 miles home for him after dropping me at my house. In the cab on the way home he admitted passing on the first call from Roadside but when they called back a little later and asked again because the next service in the rotation wouldn't do it, he agreed.

We hear the bad all the time because complaint is more common than praise but in my case it was a very good experience and Seldomridge Towing in Hillard FL is owned by a stand up guy. His tow truck driver was out sick that Saturday so the owner hopped in the truck.

I'll certainly agree to that.
And from my experience using their Trip Interruption and the Vehicle Reunite provisions (2015)... you won't like their "formula for payback" either!

??? But SKU numbers only identify the specific item, and wholesale cost is (somewhat...) fixed - These are not a "formula". (not applicable to trip interrupt nor vehicle reunite)

It’s insurance! They are hoping you die before you need it…….as long as the premium was paid in full :banghead

I won't quibble over $8 and if they mail a check in the next week I will be completely satisfied with the service and the value I got from my membership.

Unlike some other reports I have nothing negative to say about the process thus far.

Got a notice via email and text that the claim was paid today @ $241.87. That is 6 working days since I uploaded the invoice. I expect to see the check soon.

Received my check in the mail today. Completely satisfied with my experience with the tire hazard replacement program.

For me, in 2024, not such a great experience:

I was appalled with the service I recently did NOT receive during a tour of eastern Ohio. We were in Coshocton on a Saturday morning with a fast leak in the front tire of a K1300S. We called at 8:30 a.m. for a flatbed to take the bike 60 miles. Having not heard back an hour later, we called to check progress. We were assured they were looking for a contractor. At noon, we found a tire shop willing to find a tire and change it. (Big shout-out to the guys at Hillbilly Auto Service!) They found one 35 miles away. One of us drove to Zanesville and picked up the tire. We were back on the road by 2, and stopped for lunch. At 3, I called road service to cancel, got a phony apology, and hung up. Five minutes later, almost seven hours after our initial call, I got a text saying that Prince’s Wrecker Service in Coshocton would be along within an hour. I called Prince’s directly; they had gotten the order just minutes earlier. I told them thanks but no thanks, and resolved to get my money back for the so-called Platinum plan. I tour in areas much more remote than eastern Ohio; if I can't get service there, what am I going to get when I break down in a national forest in Idaho?

Interesting reading…lots of poor reviews. Maybe I’ll get CAA before I leave on Thursday for Nova Scotia..
For years I had CAA's premium towing package but no more. Once stranded in Maine, a few miles short of the New Brunswick border I called CAA Maritime. I was repeatedly told that my membership # did not exist and no tow would be sent. Finally told them to call Ontario and when they got back to me, yes I did have a membership and a truck came after a few hours. I asked if my co-ordinates might be helpful and was told yes. The driver was not given the co-ordinates. Being in the US, an American AAA driver took me to the border and a Cdn driver took it into New Brunswick. The next day the CAA driver drove the bike and me to Dieppe.

Accordion people I have spoken to at CAA, if my first tow is 350. kms which might fall short of where I need to be taken, a truck wii not be sent out the next day or following days to get me to my desired destination (the additional tows in the package can not be piggy backed), ideally a shop or individual capable to work on my BMW. I can only assume with the Maine incident that since the pickup was eventually late in the day with the bike and truck locked in the compound, an exception was allowed.

For the last three years I have been using Coach Net, a RV towing company located in Texas, who will take you and the bike wherever you need to be taken and if necessary, home. Personally I have not had need for their service but while I was out of town last week (on a bike), our car died while my wife was using it in our home city. She called Coach Net and within half an hour a tilt and load arrive and took the car to our mechanic's shop. She had zero complaints with the service.

Coach Net's yearly fee is approximately the the same as CAA's.

I’m going to buy the CAA coverage today. 99.99% of my riding is in Canada, with only the occasional few hours in the U.S and I think I’ll get better service from CAA.

The Maritimes is a beautiful place to visit on a bike.the ride around the Gatineau area is fantastic as is the Cabot trail. New Brunswick and PEI have sites certainly worth seeing. Have a safe and incident free ride! 👍

Similar to my experience. I got a flat up near Lake Lure, NC. It's rural, but it's not "off the map". It was about 20 miles to the nearest BMW Motorcycle dealer (in Asheville). Called, got the "1 hour", never showed, called back, another "1 hour", repeat, repeat. It was around 2PM on a Saturday. Eventually I had to ask my wife to get in the truck and drive up to get me. Home about 10 hours later. :( Funny thing, I didn't even need a tow. I needed someone to take my tire to the dealer down the road to have them change it. A car would have been fine. And for most motorcycle, the best "tow truck" is really a pickup, not a big flatbed.

Unless you are pulling a small trailer. 😂

I had the rear tire punctured on the way to the Rapid City Rally and called a local bike shop for a pickup to have a new tire installed. Three young men and a pickup arrived. It was quite a struggle for them to get my Oilhead into the truck’s bed. I might add that I was very relieve when they succeeded as I had fears of a different outcome. Never had any concerns when a flatbed was needed.
