HELP! Where to stay in Memphis?

upright

New member
I'll be riding with a group this weekend and we plan to ride to Memphis. Any recommendations for where to stay in Memphis? Certain parts/areas to avoid? Everything and everyplace looks safe on Expedia!

Thanks,
Craig

Memphis is high on the list of cities with high rates of violent crime. I'd recommend staying well outside of the city proper. We were there last fall and stayed at a place off an exit of I-55,15-20 miles NW of town. Seemed safe to us.

Corky's is ok but try Central BBQ close to Memphis University. Germantown is safe for a stay most of the better motels are east of town on I40 at exit 12. You have to see the duck walk at the Peabody Hotel, I understand the pyramid is open again. And of course Beale Street.

We live approx. 140 miles south of Memphis and all the tips about staying out of town proper is spot on. When you see windows with no bars on them, it's probably ok. I personally would not be anywhere near the place come night unless I was heavily armed. Better to just stay somewhere else IMO.

East Memphis is great. Good hotels and great food nearby.

Look East of Perkins Road on Poplar - Hotels are: Doubletree, Hampton, Marriott East Memphis, Embassy Suites & Hampton Inn on Shady Grove, Hilton Garden Inn, etc. pop one of these in google maps and anything nearby won't be wrong. 240 & poplar is a good starting point. Just avoid staying south of 240 close to the airport. Like most cities, it has a handful of trouble areas that give a great place a bad name.

If you want downtown, hotels off of Beal and the Peabody are good.

We live in East Memphis - moved from the "high-end, safer suburbs" and love the area.

Don't recommend west Memphis, which is actually in AR. Maybe better to give more weight to comments by locals, than by those who have "been there".

Also, the Pyramid right off I-40 in downtown is now the worlds largest Basspro...complete with a hotel in the basspro.

best daytime bbq mon-sat is cozy corner near the danny thomas/north parkway intersection....best biscuits/breakfast is a convenience store a block from performance bmw, the motorcycle dealer. have a good weekend.

I stayed in Memphis last year while riding the Great River Road, and wanted to stay close to Beale Street. Got a screaming deal on the Peabody through Priceline. Secure garage for parking bikes and walking distance to Beale and many other attractions. Would recommend it highly but score a deal, don't pay the published rate.

Too pricey for us for typical multi day trips...wheres the Super 8 or Days Inn?:laugh:laugh:laugh
