Hayes Caliper Recall

akbeemer

SURVIVOR
I frequent the R1200GSInfo forum. A poster asked if the pads and disks were replaced in the recall. I just had it done so I told him that I got new Brembo calipers and pads. Then three other posters, one each from India, Australia and Portugal, indicated they have Hayes calipers and they have not been recalled , nor have the heard of any problems with the Hayes calipers. I found this interesting. Were the Hayes calipers they have manufactured in different places, or do they have different standards for recall where they live, or are they just uninformed about the problem?

Yes

I think the recall was only in the US and maybe Canada.
A lot of people had problems with the calipers leaking.
In the US BMW is back to using Brembo.

The recall is also in Canada
I didn't have mine done since my Hayes calipers are not leaking. (2019 R1250RT)
If they start leaking , then I'll go and get them replaced.

Same here. If it ain't broke, don't fix. Besides, I love the feel and power of the Hayes.

Run, don't walk

I've got a 19RT, dealer delivered my bike with 7mi and bike sat for a week in garage, first set leaked just waiting in climate controlled garage. Those were replaced with a fresh set of Hayes. Second set made it about 5 months before they started hemorrhaging fluid. Finally got a set of brembo's for the third set. YMMV my .02 etc. but I will never ever touch another bike with Hayes calipers.

During the heyday of leak-fest, I saw several bikes at my dealership with leaking Hayes calipers on the showroom floor.....The sales person knew about the issue but left the bikes for display purposes only.
Good for Brembo to stand their ground on the name issue as BMW wanted their name on the calipers and Brembo refused.
Everyone knows that brakes are sourced from outside vendors but I guess that someone at the mothership had a senior moment and thought it was a good idea to "save" money and swap to a more compliant vendor..... :whistle :rofl
