hard starting

here I am again asking another question. my 86 r80rt is very hard to start when it is cold.I have to crank and crank to get it to start. it acts like it is trying to start.like it firing. after a lot of cranking and cloke it will start.starts well after it does start.start real after it heats up.thanks
 
Is your choke functioning properly? Sounds like it's not getting enough gas to enrichen the mixture to catch.

What are you doing to the throttle while cranking? Opening the throttle a lot will only lean out the mixture. More than likely, you should not touch the throttle or maybe crack it just a bit, like maybe 1/8th throttle.
 
Keep that throttle tight closed...don't 'juice' it, there's no accerlerator pump in the carbs...
 
Yep, valves;

My first look see would be valves adjust. Then, clean carbs, check floats and the proper level for them, plug wires with an ohm meter. Air supply(filter) and if the bike has sat for the winter, mice! They love to crawl into the airhead, make nests. Simple bike will equal simple solutions most of the time, no worries:). Randy
 
carbs have been cleaned valves adjusted timing set.I will look at air cleaner. the bike set for 1 5 months. I just got it about3 months ago.again I would to thank you guys for all the help. I am new to this air head thing.
 
The most recent Airmail had an R100GS with a similar starting problem. Turned out to be a defective ignition control unit (ICU). Earlier ICU's (your vintage) had a "timing" problem and would give hard starting. Look for white or pink writing on the unit, newest ones are turquoise and OK. It's under the tank. Item #1 in the diagram.

Pull you fuel bowls a look at the small chabmber that the choke get its fuel. There is a small jet the fuel from the main chanbers to the small chamber. It is most likly stopped up. When I bought my 75 R90 is was warm weather and it started fine. When the cold weather came I notice it was hard to start like yours. I found that the choke system was stopped up.
 
Hard start

If I understand your post, the bike sat for 15 months... This mis probably been done, but did you replace the fuel that was in the bike with fresh gas? Fuel that old will have gone bad and could account for your troubles. Also, right on with the posts about the carbs having stopped up jets... Again, sitting that long will cause the fuel to gel then dry out and leave deposits that will plug up the jets.

I agree that the problem is most likely with the choke system. I would certainly concentrate on that before looking elsewhere. One thing you might try... On most engines, using the choke when the bike is warm will cause it to run very rough and emit black smoke.. Get your bike completely warm, then start it up. Choke it and observe how the bike runs. If it dies or stumbles and emits black smoke the the choke circuit is most likely OK... If nothing happens ( the engine runs normally) then it will be obvious your chokes are not adding fuel to the mixture.
