GS Noise

How tall are you? Do you ride with a helmet? You don't like earplugs? Can you hear my voice over the ringing in your ears?

These questions all matter. The answers matter more.

The GS provides minimum wind protection by design. That way, there's fewer pieces to pick up if you drop it in the mud or sand. For many years, GSers have considered the excellent Aeroflow half-fairing for their bikes, especially if they do a lot of commuting or long distance touring.

Aeroflow always has big ads in the MOA Owners News. There are a lot of pretenders, who will supply you with a windscreen that might be better than stock. I tried three before going back to the stock screen. I'm saving up for an Aeroflow. ~$500.

before you buy anything else, try tobinators with your stock shield.

these are brackets that get placed between the mounts and the shield, and let you adjust the shield to an infinite number of positions... and due to every rider having different inseam-to-height ratios, no one shield will solve buffeting for everyone.

every rider needs a different combination of air flowing over and under the shield, and the tobinators allow this adjustment.

the tobinators let you fine-tune the position of any shield designed to use the stock mounts. they will not work on aeroflow.

you can spend way too much trying to find out which one of the many different shields might work for you, or you can buy the tobinators and make adjustments for your particular size.

ps => even with no buffeting, you should still consider wearing ear plugs. :nod

thanks for tip on adjusters, I'll read up on them, now if the temps will get above freez'en !!!! been a LONG winter here. 5.9 do wear helmet , have to wear ear plugs at work al day, ears ALREADY ring, just spoiled from the elec, glide i guess, pretty quiet till about 65mph

If that is the case, don't even bother with the adjusters; just buy the big Aeroflow, the one with the upper and lower sections.

Look into "The S Plug" ear plugs for riding. They are a ported plug, VERY comfortable, & kill the wind noise, but let you talk. $35 a pair, washable, will last a long time, like I said, VERY comfortable, I won't ride without them & I ride an RT.
Oh yeah, as an example, I have helmet speakers & can carry on a bluetooth conversation easily, talking at a normal voice. Sounds like my buddy is right there, clearer than normal. Best of all, no ringing ears after a ride.

I've got an '08 1200GS too and had the tall OEM windscreen (I'm 6'4"). The buffeting was tolerable but the wind noise was very annoying. I just put a taller CalSci shield on it and it cleared nearly all the noise out. I can actually hear the engine now!

I went with the "large" size and it worked out great. Plus, it is a bargain at $240 compared to those $500+ aftermarket shields.

Aeroflow

I'd add a vote for an aeroflow screen. No question it works. It may impact on how you consider (if you do) mounting additional lights. They do have a kit for that too.

I tried the pricey and useless Touratech lip extender and never really heard the engine for the wind and buffeting before mounting the Aeroflow.

I fitted their tallest screen. All "clear" and plexus cleans it up nicely. I'm 6'6" and use the regular seat on the high position. I still look way over the screen and still get some wind noise coming up and under the helmet on a rough and windy day. I can open the faceshield at 80 and no problem. It took me from questioning my purchase to loving my ride. Ear plugs are still a good idea although I don't always use them.
