gs intake tubes on RS

I have read about the us of gs intake tubes on a R1100RS for an increase in low end power. I purchased a set of intake tubes for a 1994 R1100GS and went to put them on my 1994 R1100RS I found that the GS tubes are about double the length of the RS tubes. I was able to slide the entire tube into the airbox, but i thought i had read somewhere that the tube needed to be trimed or modified somehow. Any input will be appreciated. thanks all, Bob Druge

Bob, I installed the GS tubes on my RT a couple of years ago. I wound up going back to the stock tubes (RS &RT are the same engine - same state of tune).

The GS tubes made a considerable amount of growly intake noise, which I liked at first, but it soon grew tiresome. Just my personal preference, obviously.

As far as performance, they did add a little down low grunt, but the engine felt a bit anemic when spun up to 5k and beyond- compared to stock. In the end I prefer to run those higher rpms, thus my decision to go back to the original tubes.

My thought: if you like to run at 3000 to 3500 rpm you'll probably like the GS tubes. If you like to frequently rev it out, you won't.

Interesting that you mention trimming the tubes. I almost tried that, as sort of a tuning exercise, trying to strike a happy medium. At this point though, I think I'll leave well enough alone. I'm finding that as the engine settles in it just gets sweeter and sweeter. It's just below 60K miles now and it's better than ever!

I did the GS inlet tubes installation on my 94 R1100RS way back in 95. No trimming needed, everything just went together with a little wiggling of parts until they moved into place. They've been in there for over 100K miles.

The GS inlet tubes did make a difference in low and mir-range. I think too they may have slight impact to reduce surging, due to the higher air velocities in the TBs. They will make more intake noise, especially if you use a K&N filter with them, when you get on the throttle. Also, common to the GS tube mod was the Pink colored CAT-CODE plug retrofit. On bikes with the grey CAT-CODE plug you replace it with the Pink CAT-CODE plug for slightly richer mixture.

I thought the GS tubes were a worthwhile mod for US style riding.
