Gs 911

I have a new to me R1100RT. I'm considering buying a GS911 scan tool I know that it will read and clear codes. What else will it do? Is it worth the investment?

The manufacturer provides a function chart here: http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/function-chart.

Scroll down to your bike model to see which controllers it communicates with, click the red text on the left for a little more detail about the functions it can provide.

Your bike does not have a service reminder light that requires a GS-911 to reset, as the post 2008 bikes do. If you are having a problem, it's nice to be able to read and clear the code yourself. It's interesting to see the values returned by the various sensors, but otherwise, I could do without it. So, it's nice but not necessary, IMHO.

Used models come up for sale in the Marketplace pretty regularly. Worth waiting for if you do not have a pressing need.

Good question. Study the function set for your model. It is limited relative to the R1150 but has some useful functions.

If you go ahead with it, consider the least expensive model. I would look for a used non-wifi, non-bluetooth version unless you plan to trade up soon.

The R1100 needs an adapter cable too.

The 3 pin version of the 911 ( R1100RT/RS version) has very limited diagnostics ability. It can give you the fault codes from the ABS unit as a series of light flashing codes. I made my unit having found a schematic for the device. Personally I think it is a waste of money for those that have the early 1100RT/RS bikes.

For the R1100RT, there is only a separate and unique 3-pin GS-911. The traditional GS-911 devices don't work on the R1100RT/RS or other 3-pin diagnostic bikes.

I believe it's a $99 part (new) and it reads codes from the ABS2 and Motronic, and will clear the codes. It will also give you a pass-fail indication that the TPS is set in the factory spec range of voltage. That's it. You download the software to a Windows PC and you have to connect the device to the bike and the PC to use it.

A GS911 hooked up to my 1100RT would not even read the TPS. Frankly you can read the codes with a simlpe LED and one resistor and reading and resetting the ABS codes are well documented here and on IBMWR tech pages. I would not waste money on a GS911 for the 1100.

The 1150 is a different generation of Motronic and more functions and features are available like setting the TPS however even there it is limited. Where you really need one is 1200 series and up.
