Garmin Quest Question

I have a Quest and it seems to allergic to my R100gspd - It will find satellites and navigate just fine as long as I'm either stopped or at a constant speed on the e-way. If I change speed, it loses signal. I tried it in my truck and it works just fine. I have a hypothesis: Maybe my ignition coil is interfering with the unit somehow. Maybe sending out an EM pulse that block the signal from the satellites. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix? Either with this model or another Garmin? Also, sometimes it resets itself by turning off and then back on. I tried running it on battery power only but the problem is still there.
weird.

First make sure where it is mounted isn't somehow screening it from the sky. Then suspect some kind of electrical interference.

I have had 3 different GPS units either turn off or lock-up going past the Amarillo, Texas airport. My Streetpilot 3 would lock up and the way to get it to do anything was to remove the batteries and start over.

I'd make sure it wasn't a mount location issue - and then call Garmin to see if they have any clues.

yeah - it has a nice view of the sky. Like i said, it works fine in my truck and on my R90s - I have tried running on battery pwr. as well. still the same.
Going to try another (friend's) gps and see if it does the same thing. JDmetzger and I have the same model and he's having the same problem on his GSPD. :buds
I was debating wrapping it in tin-foil or maybe making a ram-type mount out of lead.

weird.

Had the same problem with my 2730 but traced it to a flaky ground. Once the electrical connections were cleaned and tightened all has been fine.

Like Dave said, I have the same problem with mine. It works perfectly on my R80/7 as well as in my truck. On my GSPD, it's fine at a stop, and it's fine if I'm in motion. If I have to slow down or stop, the GPS locks up, reboots, or looses it's signal. Generally it locks up. I was thinking electrical anomalies (I think I may have a voltage regulator issue) but when it locks up running on internal battery, that pretty much eliminates wiring issues.

That being said, I mounted it to my GSPD when I first purchased the thing, and it worked just fine all the way home. The difference is the mounting location; I attached it to the left side of the bars and had no issues. Now it's mounted in a more "center" location. On the right side towards the front of the bike is the ignition coil, as well as other "electronics" (as fancy as an Airhead gets). I guess it's technically possible we're getting EMI/RFI - since this is happening to two different units on two different bikes. More testing will be required. I already emailed Dave and asked if he would move his GPS to the left side of the bars and try again. His is easy to disconnect from the bike wiring, but mine isn't - otherwise I'd do it, myself. :)

Fixed!

OK - I seem to have fixed the problem. I moved the unit to the left side of the bike. I had it on the right at first so I wouldn't be as tempted to play with it while riding. I took it for a test ride yesterday and it works just fine now. :clap
It must have be interference from the coil or something else on the right side. Maybe it's just a socialist gps. :brow

P.S. Anyone make the move from Quest2 to Zumo have any observations to share on what they like and what they miss?

I have just moved to Zumo 450 from Quest (not Quest2 although they are identical except for storage capacity from what I understand). I'm still learning the Zumo so I cannot say that there is anything that I miss. I like the MP3 player. Now I just need either helmet speakers or more comfortable ear buds. The 3D mapping display is very nice. The Quest's view from above is OK but I like the view from above and a bit behind so you get a better idea of the road ahead. I haven't tried to do any route planning on the Zumo but I neved did with the Quest either. I figure if they're gonna supply MapSource with the GPS unit, then I will use it.

Oh, and I think the ability to load pictures to the Zumo and then use them as the startup splash screen is pretty cool.

And the reason for the replacement -- my Quest is not picking up satellites at all and we have lost the proof of purchase. So, I decided that if I am going to pay to fix it, I might as well spend a few more dollars and get a new Zumo.
