F800GT - Replaced a bad BMW horn with an excellent BMW horn

Dum vivimus vivamus
Hi Folks,

My Stock '13 F800GT horn had grown more and more tinny recently, and finally just stopped making any noise at all. I really missed the horn on my K75RT so I thought it might be a good time to upgrade. I read a thread over on F800 Riders about simply replacing the whiny stock horn with a robust K-bike horn and I thought I would give it a try.

I hopped on eBay and for $15 shipped I bought:
BMW K1200LT 1997-2004, HORN LOW PITCH PART # 61332305909
It arrived quickly and looked brand new. Physically the replacement had the exact same wiring bracket, mount tang, and was very close in size and shape.

Install was maybe 5 minutes. I needed a ratchet with a 6”extension and 13mm socket. I carefully unplugged the stock wiring bracket from the old horn (squeeze tab and pull). I removed the 13mm nut at the top of the old horn, removed the old horn, replaced with the new, replaced the nut, plugged in wire bracket.

Voila, new horn is LOUD, very loud. An easy, inexpensive, and outstanding upgrade!

Making friends with your new bike, Ted? Really great to see you around here.

Can you believe we were on the IBMWR together 30 years ago?

Hi Dave, hi Paul! lol- always good to see some of the OG riders on the boards :)

30 Years, isn’t that something - and I still have that c. 1986 Aerostich Roadcrafter I bought very used as my first piece of riding gear!

I occasionally ride to work and DC traffic has just gotten so much worse with the advent of iPhones, and the need to answer texts and emails while merging at 50mph. I do get a kick out of giving a toot to a brain dead cager and watching them bolt straight up expecting to see a dump truck. If you ride in traffic, this is one very worthwhile upgrade :)

The best horn I have had on a motorcycle was a set of Fiamm air horns on my original R75/5. They were a mini dual trumpet horn setup with compressor and while ugly they were loud as hell and because they sounded like deiseal truck horns I could get an errant driver to change a full lane away from me in an instant.
