F650GS Twin chain clanking at slow speed

2009 F650GS Twin. Just bought this bike, has 13000 miles. At really slow speeds in 1st or 2nd gear the chain makes some clunking sounds. It seems like it may be hitting the center stand. Don't know. The bike just had its 12,000 mile service. Is a chain adjust called for? Or is it normal? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like the chain- or at least the chain could make that type of noise. As it's at a slow speed, you could have someone watch the chain as you drive by and see if it has a bit of a "whip" to it. If you do adjust it, refer to the manual. Some slack is needed so when the suspension compresses the chain has room to stretch out. Good luck. Gary

My first guess would be a loose drive chain, Check your adjustment and, as Omega Man says, be sure not to overtighten it.

It might also have a tight link in it, or perhaps a deformed tooth...
If you have a centerstand that makes it easier to inspect!

The 2009 Chain has a recall on it if it is still the original chain, which I'm guessing it is at that mileage!!!! Contact your BMW dealer. The chain could break.
