Engine dies suddenly

Greetings - 2007 R1200RT, 59,000 miles. Last week as I was approaching a stop sign and almost stopped, the engine suddenly died, thought it was just a fluke, but did it again yesterday. Restarts immediately. No codes on the dash. Bike runs great, rev's fast, and had never done this before. Any ideas? Thanks all.

No R1200/RT specific recalls for this kind of problem in this listing:

Gas related? What was the status of fuel level in the tank? Not sure about these twins, but could the gas tank not be breathing, thus creating a vacuum delaying delivery of the fuel. On Airheads, something like this could be attributed to the floats set too low and stopping exacerbates fuel flow.

Thank you for the replies! All my recalls are up to date. Tank was about 1/2 full. Never thought about a possible tank vacuum. While stopping and when I pull the clutch lever in, the engine RPM drops to about 1100 and idles there until I accelerate. On these occasions, the engine RPM just dropped to 0 RPM. Any thoughts on fuel or electrical? Again, it had never done this before, no codes or lights on the dash, and it immediately restarted. Thanks!!

Almost sounds like an ailing FPC (fuel pump controller) module. Located in the fuel pump plate well which is under left sharkfin.
You can see it looking down from the bars , triangle shaped module by the fuel line connectors. Around that time they went from bare aluminum to a black coated unit. The silver ones would corrode, worse on the RT and GS as it sits in water from rain or washing as that well is horizontal.

Has the bike been wet the last few days?

Looking for the thread...

Exactly like my FPC failure other than it never started again. Do check this out immediately and apply the recall as well if not already done. This can be a very serious safety issue if it happens in heavy multi-lane traffic.

BTW, BurnsMoto sells a bypass that may help you test the FPC.

And this Best of Forum for fuel pump controller thoughts- https://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?55047-Everything-you-wanted-to-know

I'd check the battery connections foist :)

UPDATE: Battery terminals were tight. Removed fuel pump controller switch, contacts were clean, no gunk, no rust, reassembled with dialectic grease. Bike to dealer for computer check, no fault codes! Throttle's are running evenly. Was suggested I try BG-44K in case it could be dirty throttle bodies. Thanks everyone, I'll keep you posted.

Mine looked absolutely pristine, yet the FPC failed so it would be good to keep an eye on things and get the bypass cable noted by Omega Man should it fail again in a place you would have to tow out of.

A silly stab but easy to check- mine did that a couple timesaver figured out it was my side stand switch. It was not making good contact and would occasionally kill the engine going over a bump or abrupt speed changes. It won't throw a code either

Just ordered up the bypass cable from BurnsMoto. Thank you Omega Man for the tip. What did we ever do with-out all this help, back in the old days??

So wasn't there a recall on your model to replace it with the black one or am I thinking of a different fuel pump related recall? And if it was the FPC shouldn't it throw a code as described in the lengthy link above? So it sounds like that isn't your problem but you have the bypass just in case it crops up.

Checked with my dealer - the recall was for the fuel pump, not the FPC. I sure hope it's just that switch and not something more mysterious. Bypass wire is on it's way!

Denny - if you use Facebook, could you please make a post in the MOA Facebook Group telling them that you got great help here on the MOA forum? Maybe post a link to this thread.

Thanks!
