Crushed Filter?

darryl cainey

Sir Darby
When I removed my oil filter that I bought from an alternative BMW Shop last year I found it to be distorted as if under pressure from inside!

This was my 2nd oil change this season.

I do my regular oil changes at 3000 miles and have never had this
happen to a filter before.

Have you ever seen this? Even the metal tube on the inside was crushed
and the end plates are warped!

This is from a 1977 R100RS with 475,000 miles on it and I am very familiar with doing oil changes!

Brand of filter used?

Some folks have reported occasional, similar failures using non-OEM brand filters - I think that "Fram" was mentioned before?

Would definitely like to hear the brand. Was it the unhinged filter type? I don't really like the hinged type, but that's just about all you can get these days. But have the metal caps in the middle cuts down on the unsupported length of the filter, thus going a long way to preventing the crushed-filter-syndrome...in addition to using OEM.

The filter is from:

HIFLOWFILTRO
Premium Oil Filter HF 161

Marked Replaces: BMW 11 42 1 337 572
BMW 11 42 1 337 198

This is the straight Filter used with no oil cooler.

I did have a problem once with a Fram Filter and the rubber rings staying down on the tube!
Very hard to get out!
I had to sacrifice one of my wife's Fondue Forks!

While I've only done ONE :wave oil filter change I do seem to remember something in the literature about the possiblity of the pipe at the far end of the cannister possibly coming loose - ie. it was not seated properly?

I dunno, maybe I was hallucinating...:scratch

Crushed Filter

I've certainly seen this before, several times, but it's been a lot of years. Unfortunately one involved the dissection of an R100/7. A connecting rod end had failed and ripped the balance weight off the crank; what a mess. And inside the oil filter cavity we found a bulged and split filter.

Not long after I serviced another Airhead and found a filter split along its length.

It was not a coincidence; both owners had attended, and bought cheap aftermarket filters, at the Finger Lakes Rally. Given the passage of time, I don't recall the brand, but for these owners at least it was false economy.

crushed filter

hi Darryl I had this happen to me in the past back in N ireland the filter was a DUNIT type bought from Moto bins in the seventies ,with about 50000km on the engine .also had it happen last year with a purolater type old stock i think bought at a rally but i belive the culprit is to much throttle on cold oil 20/50 my bike then and is now a 1977 r100 s/rs 330000k there is a bye pass route so the oil can circulate, hope this helps buy the way this is my first post so be gentle
