Crash Bars for 2016 R1200RT

Any recommendations for front and rear crash bars for the 2016 R1200 RT? Prefer something easy to mount .....

Do you carry a passenger? If so, pay attention to the rear crash bar mounting bracket. Some mounts interfere with the passenger's foot peg in that it makes getting on and off the bike difficult. Heed makes a nice front crash bar (well made and affordable) but the rear bar has the interference issue.

I believe the Ilium's don't need to be removed to remove the valve covers. The Wunderlich model requires that you at least loosen the connections to service the valve clearance.

I just installed Ilium engine bars and really like them. On my 2011 I had the pegs and did a slow drop of the bike at an intersection with the pegs out for use

When the bike fell over it landed on the pegs and it was like a miracle happened - it stopped falling about 3/4 over. Made it easy to lift upright with no damage. Ilium makes a well engineered product. (Off topic story but a nice save)

I am happy with my Ilium bars. Engine guards installed when new and I added the bag guards this spring. They have already paid for themselves. This last weekend at the Hiawatha rally, I road in from a ride and parked on the grass but seemed a bit hilly. Long story short, I was removing my boots and laid a hand on the bike from the left side for balance, and the bike went over. It rolled right up on those bars and balanced without any damage at all. They work. And, the rear bars do not interfere with my pillion rider.

Z-technik for me also. I like the look better than the Illium's, but I'm not saying anything bad about them! It's just the looks for me. YMMV

I went with the Touratech bars. Very beefy. These actually come with a skid plate as well. Kind of nice to have that too.

This is really the main reason for me to consider guards beyond the BMW valve cover protectors the dealer put on my '16 before I picked it up. I have a back that could not tolerate lifting the bike up should it go down so I would love to have something that would make the bike uprightable as it were after a tip over.

Looking at Touratech's design approach makes me wonder why you couldn't completely avoid the full complex tubing design and just use the two valve cover bolt holes Touratech uses, with a single U-shaped stainless steel tube bolt design--you could include a folding highway peg as well. I have no idea how robust the bolt holes are there but if they are robust enough to handle drop force it could be an inexpensive yet effective way to provide fair protection and highway pegs as well, though the pegs might be too far rearward to have them be very useful.

Although not as attractive your best bet would likely be the front crash bars on the law enforcement RT-P version and civilian aftermarket rears.
