Concealed garage door opener?

Stuff2C said:
IÔÇÖve been making my own for years. Just take your garage door opener apart and find the push switch on the circuit board and solder the switch closed. Remove the battery and solder a red wire on the positive side and a black on the negative side (color is not that important :) just get polarity right). Then wire the positive to the high beam on your headlight and ground the other one. Pull up to the door and flash your high beam. Never look for that lost in the gear remote again. By the way mine uses a 9v battery with no ill affects on the unit for many many years of use. I have one on every one of my bikes.

Sorry, I thought this made it clear. :dunno

My new SEARS units also use 12v batteries and I just tie wrap mine to the frame with no additional weather proofing.

Here is an extra one I had lying around (a picture is...) I just wrap mine in tape because this just makes for a smaller pkg. + to high beam - to ground...DONE.

Somthing like that with some additional farkles

I purchased a momentary switch at Radio Shack (about $3.00) and soldered it into my existing garage door opener. Using a two wire connector routed through the glove box and up to the dash I installed the switch through the dash. I velcroe the garage door opener in place in the glove box and hit the switch on the dash to open or close the door.

I mounted the switch on the little face plate (where the oEM controls for the radio would normally be) and have the switch right at my fingertips.

Also I purchased a 12VDC to 9VDC converter and wired it to one of my switched power circuits in order never to worry about replacing the battery. I bundled the lot in duct tape and affixed this little gem inside the left fairing of my 1200RT. Works like a charm from about 50 ft away and I can time my turn into the driveway just perfectly not to hit the door and zoom right in and do a stoppie before I enter the Den lol (joke about the stoppie...)

geez, and here i thought i was cool and all by keeping my factory remote in my tank bag pocket. Randy at Chicane builds in a small top pocket just perfect for things like that. quick zip open, and done. (the pocket is the "bump" with the retro-reflective forward of the map pocket).

Use your Horn button

Anybody figured a way to install a remote switch and hardwire a concealed garage door opener to facilitate getting into the garage?

I use the horn to trigger a relay to switch a remote control on an off. Attached, is a crude schematic of how I set it up. IÔÇÖve used this for several years and it works great. I pull up to the garage, toot the horn and the door opens like magic. Toot it again and down goes the door.

I have one that is always in my pocket, works great.
I have plenty of driveway and I like to leave the bike out to cool off.

Concealed Garage Door Opener

Coop28,

I currently have my spare garage door opener concealed in the cavity behind the brake light on my K1200RS. I put it into a small electronics project box and hooked it up using a small 12v relay. It is hooked up to my horn on the bike. All I have to do is honk my horn when I pull up to the garage. Works well. Let me know if you need the details and I will put something together.
