Carb Stix

Is there a way to eliminate the air bubbles that sometimes appear in the mercury columns?

I'll try the tapping method. Instead of the carb stix I thought of using two vacuum gages but I do not think the accuracy with gages would be as good as the carb stix.

I built my own and mounted it to the wall of my garage. I think it cost me a little bit more, but it was less than $10 at the time. Still works like a charm.

Apply slight air pressure into the tube. The mercury returns to the reservoir and when re-enters the tube the bubbles are gone.

When I say slight air pressure I mean slight air pressure. You could blow into the tube. You can use a bulb type ear syringe. Blow. Do not suck.

As long as you brought it up, can you still buy Carb Sticks? I thought they quit making them years ago, because of the Mercury. I have a Twin Max and it seems to work ok, but I sure wish I had my old Carb Stick back.

Sticks vs the Max;

I've used both so long, I forgot my age! :). No, really the mercury was fine and now I'm a TM user for years now. I see little difference. My R100/7 has been with me so long now(since new), I find I have grown to have a touch, a feel for those cables to the point of NO sychronizer is used for "years and years"now. I have it! Its so smooth, just by my hand/eyeball thing:). You do thousands of these and you'll get it too:). Happy Trails, Randy PS; I love the Twin Max, because its packable in the saddlebags(my GSA1200), where I never could figure out the mercury stick packing thing? :thumb

I think Motion Pro offers a device that uses a fluid similar to mercury but is non-toxic. I doubt if you can buy original Carb Stix (using mercury) anymore. I have had mine for a long time, long before there were regulations on the sale of such things.

I might just cave in to technology and get an electronic device such as the Twin Max or something similar.

I love my Morgan CarbTune, though it is not quite as packable as a Twinmax, I can hookup 4 carbs at once. Stainless steel slides/rotameter design means no spills. Use it right side up for Japanese bikes/upside down for greater sensitivity with airheads.

That's the site I found when I made mine. 1/20" mercury = 13/16" oil.

I've always used the mercury sticks and find they work great, but I must say I'm very taken with the simplicity and potential sensitivity of the oil stix setup, and can see no downside to it. Makes me wish I didn't already have the mercury setup so I could try it:)

For a few $, you can make one - then compare it to your mercury sticks.

We'll be expecting a report......:)
