Cam Shift noise - 2022 1250rt ???

I'm looking for someone who may have had the same experience.

I recently purchased a used 2022 R1250rt with about 13k on it, and I've put about 1k on it. The previous owner told me I would hear/feel the cam shift, which I think I do. In other words, does anyone else hear/feel the cam shift? My 2016 does not do this but does not have the cam shift either.

There are no error codes, and it rides fine and strong, but I'm hearing a noise (sort of like a "pop"), so I'm thinking maybe it the butterfly flap in the exhaust.

I'm looking for anyone having the same noise. I'll have the dealer look at it at the next service. I think I may be too critical because it rides fine.

Thanks

Yes - when I accelerate hard there's an audible whoosh between 4-5K RPMs and an associated boost in acceleration. It's really only noticeable on my bike when using a very aggressive throttle. Sometimes it sounds like a pop if the throttle is wide open. Smooth, gradual acceleration is much more subdued.

I think the valve timing change “hit” is just something one gets used to (or not).
Honda’s popular VFR series has gone back and forth on the concept since the mid-80’s. Some years have VTEC and some don’t. Torque, hp and maybe emissions benefit, but even without it, the bikes are all pretty fast.

Yes, on my ride today, I tried to monitor it more and noticed it in the first and second gears, right about the 4700 RPM range. So it appears this is normal.

Perfectly normal. Each intake cam has two pairs of lobes. When the ECU decides the time has come to shift from using the torque-focused lower rpm lobe pair to the power-focused higher rpm lobe pair, it commands the solenoids in each head to physically drive the intake cams laterally (fore/aft in the direction of travel) about 3/4". The entire cam shift happens in one cam revolution, so at speed it's a very rapid movement of a non-insignificant amount of mass -- hence the audible mechanical noise.

Yes, I have it with my 2023 1250 gs. Just past 4000 rpm, it will make a noticeable but slight “pop” on acceleration. Mechanic at the dealership told me to ignore it.

I brought my 2022 r1250rt three years ago and have about 20k on it now. There is a distinct change in the exhaust note and noticeable surge in power at around 3700 rpm. You need to be on it pretty strong to clearly hear and feel the surge. I have not experienced any popping.
