bmw fuel system cleaner plus?????

hey guys,

was cruising a&s cycles at random, and found a product called bmw fuel system cleaner plus. goes for 14 bucks a bottle which is pretty costly, and was wondering if anyone used it.

as some may know, i'm the 2nd owner of my bike with 15700 miles on it (700 of those mine in 2 weeks) and i figure running a bottle of this stuff at this point couldn't hurt. i'm due for a service at 18000 miles so my logic is to maybe clean some gunk out, if any, before that.

question is, do i have to use this type? i've used techron, lucas, etc...in my cars before, can those be used in our R's as well? any specific one recommended? just fix the ratio to match with our bike's fuel capacity?

thanks again guys!

I am fairly certain it is rebranded Chevron Fuel System Cleaner With Techron, about $8 at your favorite auto parts store.

so the techron branded one from the local station will work just the same. i've read a lot of people do this on the last tank they run thru before they do an oil change. would it be better to wait till then to do it, or could i just go ahead and go thru with it the next time i fill up?

Better to wait for routine use. Better to use right away if you have symptoms of rough running or lean running due to gummy injectors or carbon deposits.

It is a good idea to get any of the gums or carbon it dissolves or breaks loose out of the oil as soon as possible.

hmmmm....well what i can say about the bike thus far is it seems to be performing slightly poorly at slow speeds...ie slight surging at times. and it also is starting poorly now that temps have dropped into the 60's...when sitting overnight, or while sitting still while it's in the parking garage at work, it will fire up on the first run run for about 10 seconds and die...then i have to start it up again and it starts just fine. no clue if this has anything to do with clogged injectors or anything???

i haven't been riding long enough i suppose to know/feel if the bike is running lean i guess...

all around though, i guess i'll wait till i'm on my final tank before the 18k service, unless you guys think my symptoms sound weird and this could possibly clear it up.

BMW fuel system cleaner appears to be re-labeled Chevron Techron. Look at the code on the bottom of the BMW bottle--same as Techron.

BTW, I have used Techron on the advice of my dealer in my K-75, R1150R and now my R1200R. About once a month I add the recommended amount. Like Dinosaur Whistles, you never know if they are working or not since you never either see them or have any FI problems.

Generally speaking - if you don't notice a difference it didn't clean up much. Maybe, it removes a little bit of gummy stuff before it is a problem.

But if you use it as a curative because you have symptoms of a problem you will almost immediately see the difference. If you have partially clogged injectors and a lean condition - rough running, a bit of a surge, maybe stumble on acceleration, etc. and use it you will see the difference.

Like Paul says..but it might take a few tank fulls before anything is noticed..

I've used Techron for years in all my vehicles...GREAT STUFF!!!:clap

I have used Techron, twice per season, for the 15 years I have been riding my 94 R1100RS. Now at 143,000 miles I have had no fuel system problems at all.

so is the overall consensus to wait till i'm closer to the oil change to do this then?? i'd like to try it out, as my tank is nearly empty so it would be good to put it in during next fill up. however i don't have a oil change for another 2k miles so whatever it cleared out of the fuel system crud would be sitting around in there until 18k miles!

Unless you are experiencing rough or slow idle, or roughness on acceleration, I'd wait.

But if you are experiencing symptoms, then I would do it now, irrespective of the oil change.
