Battery access- newbie owner R1100S 2002

OK, I have read Haynes and searched the archives, and am reasonably capable as a wrencher, but I find it mystifying to get to the battery on my 2002 R110S for either tending or storing inside. I have removed all the obvious bolts on the left side panel but have not yet forced the panel off. Maybe I have overlooked a key screw or interlocking device. Please advise. I see that the right panel and air pipes need to come off next.

I also see a possible Powerlet female port on the left side. No obvious marking but guessing that is what it is. Maybe 10 mm female opening. It looks like I could charge through that if I 1) buy the right adapter , and 2) run 150 feet of extension to my shed for the winter. Is that a good solution?

I love the bike but never imagined that it would be so hard to take the battery out.

Advice appreciated.

Like Gary says, the threads will be helpful. There are a couple of fasteners that you can only reach by laying on the floor and reaching inside the fairing on both sides. A PITA, especially the first couple of times you do it. Gets easier with experience and most S Riders take care of other things while the fairing panels are off. I hard wired directly to the battery for my CTEK charger when installing a new battery...
 
The battery on the R1100S is one of the more difficult to access!

I take off both body side panels. The one fastener on each that's difficult to see and access is up inside the front wheel well. It's above the fender, below the telelever A-arm. I use a small 3mm hex key. It's a touch easier if you turn the front wheel from side to side. As Bill says, it gets easier after a time or two.

Having said all that, I find those panels much easier to deal with than my old R1100RT, plus the R1100S body panels don't need to come off for routine oil and filter changes, nor for throttle body syncs. Unfortunately, they do have to come off to change or clean the air filter.

The original purchaser of my S added the OEM accessory port in front of the rear wheel, left side. I do use that to do occasional battery charges. Seems to work.
 
The two hidden screws are under the roundels. There are also 2 in the nose below and to the sides of the oil cooler screens. Likely you have a Powerlet port installed, very very common addition. Yes, you can charge the batter from that.

all good links and suggestions. I thought I had searched the archives but did not get the key stuff. NTL I got the body panels off and battery out and on to a tender. I will also pursue the male plug to go with the powerlet port installed on the left side. But the bike sits in a shed with no power so getting the battery into the house was a priority.
