I purchase my bike a year ago and since then I spend more then $8.000 on it!!!
I feel dummy. LOL

:scratch :scratch :scratch

What have you done in the last year? A summary please.:D

Sorry it has been so costly, but think of the gas you are saving. At least that is what I tell my wife. I had to fill up my truck last week and the family was riding with me. When I got back in the truck I made sure she knew it was $100 for a tank of gas. That would last less than a week if I was driving the truck all of the time. Instead, I spend less than $20 on the motorcycle.

I've got to suggest some parts and accessory purchases before the impact wears off.:brow

please tell us more, we'd be interested to hear what bike youve got and whats gone wrong with it. there are a lot of experienced airhead riders here on the forums and maybe they can help you save a little money on service and parts, and spend more on gas.

Don't get me wrong the bike is lovely and runs fantastic after all this improvement.
I not home know but tonight I will go over my paper to brake down the work.

new front fork
new tires
new batterie
new seat
lube spline
new rear brake
new cables
new front fender
new light signal front and back
new push rods seal
enduralast
new mirror
new heat grips

etc......I will list later

Welcome to the Party, pal. :groovy U don't own the bike, the bike owns U. :deal I've been in this conumdrum for years.:stick It's worst than crack cocaine :brow Your a slave to the addiction.:bow My next fix will be the addition of a niippondenso starter, then brown dual lead coils for my dual plugged heads. :heart U and I both need professional help. :dunno

maybe this'll help

Fab, I saw your post and vowed to go get my service receipts. Maybe this'll make you feel better about your own expenditurismos.

Now add in a few oil changes, clean the steering head bearings, some more of those $12 gaskets, shims, o-rings, brackets, filters, some fluids, toss in the labor for all that and some parts I haven't mentioned, some other parts I've forgotten, in fact, toss in some more labor, and then some more labor on top of that and you've got yourself a nice old airhead...almost

...the forks still aren't right:bottle :sick :hungover :banghead :violin :help :laugh

Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW.

I love mine, and I will never sell it. It would be bad business to sell at a loss. :deal

Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW.

I think the majority of us find that out the hardway. I paid $2,600 for my 88 R100RT 3.5 years ago. I think I've put twice that into it doing...

During the first year
ÔÇó Replaced the throttle and choke cables,
ÔÇó Replaced the rubber tubes on the carbs and intake tubes,
ÔÇó Changed all the fluids,
ÔÇó Replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires,
ÔÇó Had the transmission rebuild (new seals, springs, and bearings),
ÔÇó Replaced the clutch,
ÔÇó Replaced the main seal, and oil pump O ring,
ÔÇó Replaced the swing arm bearings,
ÔÇó Replaced the clutch activator arm needle bearings and boot, ,
ÔÇó Replaced drive shaft boot,
ÔÇó Touched up the paint on the frame,
ÔÇó Replaced the foot peg and shift lever rubber,
ÔÇó Rebuilt the carbs, and rejetted to 145 mains,48 idle, and 2.68 needle
ÔÇó Repaired the light socket for the voltmeter,
ÔÇó Replaced the internal backing plate on the instrument cluster and repaired non functioning lights,
ÔÇó Replaced the headers,
ÔÇó Replaced the coil,
ÔÇó Replaced left cylinder base seals and pushrod seals,
ÔÇó Replaced the crankshaft seal behind alternator,
ÔÇó Replaced the O ring on the timing unit,
ÔÇó Removed the pulse air system.
ÔÇó Replaced heat sink paste on ignition module
ÔÇó Repainted rocker covers
ÔÇó Had cylinder stud repaired (short stud on cylinder)
ÔÇó Replaced battery

During the second year, I

ÔÇó Replaced front wheel bearings
ÔÇó Replaced fork seals and repainted fork sliders
ÔÇó Rebuilt front forks (new progressive springs)
ÔÇó Replaced fork boots (on fairing)
ÔÇó Replaced steering head bearings
ÔÇó Replaced dash.
ÔÇó Replaced rubber gaskets on fairing

During the third year, I

ÔÇó Replaced the kill switch
ÔÇó Replaced rear shock with Works shock
ÔÇó Replaced front brake disks and pads
ÔÇó Had the final drive rebuilt.
ÔÇó Had the spring replaced on driveshaft.
ÔÇó Replaced voltage regulator
ÔÇó Replaced springs on mechanical advance
ÔÇó Replaced center stand.
ÔÇó Had a crack welded on sub frame, and re-powder coated

Items left to do
ÔÇó Replace seat cover
ÔÇó Timing chain

The important thing, at least for me, was doing the repairs as well as riding. Restoring a vehicle is ALWAYS more expensive than purchasing a restored vehicle

"Nothing's more expensive than a cheap BMW"- Gawd, ain't that the truth.

For my little Wee-M-W, I've:

Rebuilt transmission (broken shift return spring, et al) - $787
Replaced headset bearings - $400
Rebuilt carbies, chased down electrical gremlins, replaced rear tire - $1100
Rebuilt final drive - $350
Replaced rear shocks - $120
Added GhettoTek panniers - $150

Then again, I've also ridden the thing for 20k miles this year...

Thanx, Rich. One of these Sunday mornings soon I'll get out to the Southside and we can grab a coffee, and explain why the Sox aren't hitting.

Fabiox, I'm coming to NY on the 18/19. I'll pm you w some contact info. I'd love to see your scoot and say hi if our scheds match up.

I feel better now...

I feel better knowing that I'm just "one of the gang" that's poured considerable bucks into really neat motorcycles.

Thanks, folks, I know now that I'm not alone.

If and when the day comes when I sell one of my airheads, the LAST thing I'll do is sit down with receipts and a calculator to figure out any profit/loss. We all already know how that story ends...

Motorrad .n, German [moh-tor-rad], English translation: motorcycle [moh-ter-sahy-kuh l]

1. A two-wheeled vehicle resembling a heavy bicycle, propelled by a gasoline engine.
2. A mechanical device cleverly designed to simultaneously bring great joy to the rider while draining the riderÔÇÖs financial assets.

High Cost of Restorations

A long time ago there was an article that said the cost of a new Mazda GLC was $5285 and the cost of all the parts priced individually was $27500 AND there were a few parts, such as the entire unit frame/chassis that could not be purchased individually. This would put the cost of a Mazda GLC purchased as spare parts well over $30,000 and that would not include any labor to assemble or paint it.

What is the moral of the story? If you have to repair or replace more than 20% of the parts on a vehicle, you could easily buy a new one for less money.

The difference between the price of parts sold individually, and the price of a new vehicle is why real automotive restorations can easily cost over $100,000, and restored motorcycles can easily cost more than $10,000 in parts alone.

Only $8000?

Just to make you feel better, I am sure that I have more than $10,000 in my R 80 ST and its market value is probably $3500....but my wife only sees the initial purchase price :deal

And I thought I had more money in my ST then anyone else would ever consider spending. Thanks for spending, now you can be my defense.

great i feel much better now that i know i am not the only one i just wished that i was more mechanic oriented.
