'95 K75 Standard - Timing Chain Noises ?

72r60/7

'95 K75 Standard (no fairing or windshield) 67,000 mi.

To my one good untrained ear, it sounds like I am hearing timing chain slap/ metallic knocking noises between load and no load. Clearly on deceleration. Not really until engine is warmer and definitely when it is hot. Noise is positive and location that it is coming from is a little harder to determine the exact location. Sometimes the noise seams to be like the release of energy that has built up to the point of necessary release. Been doing this a while and has been coming on gradually and has not occurred suddenly. I have waited until it was very obvious and could be described in a way to explain to others to help diagnose the issue.

I wonder how you know if the hydraulic tensioner is working properly.

Would the plastic chain guide being worn make the short sharp metallic knocks that I hear. Seem that I remember that the early 4 cylinders had problems with the plastic guides wearing prematurely.

I hate to go in and fix one thing at a time, but don't want to assume the chain is stretched when they last and should last many more miles than less than 100,000 miles. How would you tell if the problem was the
possibly the timing chain if it is not obvious upon visual inspection ?

I welcome any thoughts, opinions or personal experiences.

alternator drive cushions shot?

Have you looked at the alternator drive assembly? There are three sets of rubber cushions between the drive and driven sections of the alternator. The sound you are describing makes me think of these. Before you dig into engine timing problems I would check the alternator drive first. I had the same noise on my K75S and I am hearing that noise on my K100RS.

Good suggestion and an easy thing to check. The bushings were last checked in 2/15 and 19,000 miles ago. Wouldn't that be nice if it were something so simple, as it is my nature to think the worst and most times, with mechanical issues,it turns out that it is something totally different and much more minor than the "sky is falling".

Not sure if that explains the cold and warm/hot occurances though. Nor when the noise occurs at slower speed and not at higher speeds.
