'85K100LT final drive noise

I am getting what seems like jerking or slipping in the final drive. I am thinking it is a spline problem. Is this something an average wrencher could tackle. I have never worked on the final drive and don't know if this is something I want to tackle. Just don't want to get in over my head. Do I need any special tools for this?

Inspecting it is easy.

Put bike on center stand, remove rear wheel.

Remove 2 caliper mounting bolts, hang caliper out of the way.

Remove speed sensor wire from clip on swing arm.

Support swing arm so it will not drop more than 1" from present position.

Remove 4 bolts that attach sping to final drive, pull final drive back 1 1/2" to disengage splines, rotate final dive 90 degrees on shock to get a better look at splines.

Splines should have a squared off top and bottom with no step on the sides of the splines. _/ \_/ \_/ \_

If OK, reassemble withs lots of Honda Moly 60 (available from Honda bike shops). Regrease every 6-8,000 miles. (probably why you have this problem)

If not OK, replace with non worn used final drive and driveshaft or have Bruno's http://www.brunos.us/ repair yours.
