2024 National Rally - Where Will It Be?

In all my years of touring I have found trying to plan around and manage the weather is a no win scenario. Yes you take some basic precautions such as the time of year you ride certain areas and watching for things like hurricanes and blizzards, but my thinking is if you ride in the summer (June, July, August) plan on HOT. But also plan on taking a heated vest or liner because you just never know.

And in my discussion with riding buddies I am in the minority when I say I would rather ride in extreme heat than extreme cold. And what I mean is I would rather ride in say 95+ degrees than in say 30 degrees or less. But that is just me. My 3 or 4 riding buddies always say they'd take the 30 and below.

Personally I like that the BMW Rally moves around the country each year but honestly would prefer a set time that is consistent. But I guess with all the variables that may be a challenge too.

Are rally location announcements issued around the same date every year or do they vary? I think last years announcement was in mid May.

Now, the selection is usually made before or by the April board meeting. If contract(s) are fully executed the announcement will be made. If not, the announcement will be made as soon as all contracts are finalized.

In the olden days of yore the next year's site was always announced at the closing ceremonies at the current year rally. Some folks thought that if folks liked next year's site better they might not come to the current year rally so it was a big secret. Some of us thought this was nonsense and that we didn't need to fool members into coming to rallies.

Here's what Reece said a couple weeks ago.

We are close to announcing soon. We just approved location last month, once the ink is dry on the contracts Ted and the staff should be announcing.

There was an April Board meeting?

I did not say there was an April Board meeting in 2023. I said it was usually made before the April Board meeting - back when there was always an April Board meeting. Back when the meetings were always in St. Louis except the ones at the rallies or rally sites, and except the one we had in Tuscon so Jeff Dean could stay in Arizona that winter.

I actually have no idea when or where Board meetings are anymore, except when I read about them after they have happened. Not that I couldn't find out if I tried. But I don't care. I am generally pleased with the Board and what they do. If I wasn't I might run for the Board again. But I am, so I let them do their work and am happy that they are willing to do it, in April or whenever!

Board meetings are usually reserved for board members. That's why it's called a board meeting.

I'd be quite surprised if a non board member could attend a board meeting.

Correct. These are only board members and occasionally an invited guest. The in persons you’ve attended of late are open session meetings and take place a few times a year.

Board meetings used to be held 4 times a year and any member could attend the open session. When I was webmaster and forum liaison I went to many of them.

We used to have videoconferences, too.

Personally, I enjoy following along with what’s happening in our club. For instance, looking at the masthead of a recent BMW Owners News I see that we hired a new Business Development person. Given that we are a member-driven club, I think all members would feel more a part of our club (and less like a customer) if that opportunity was made available to any qualified member. ymmv.

If we truly are a member-driven club, this type of information would be available to all members and announced during the open session of a board meeting. It would also be published in our magazine, web site and some social channels.

One other observation, in October, we always held the board meeting at the next year’s rally site. This would allow many members to come and get excited about volunteering at the rally. In the many times that I have done this I have found it to be a strong community building exercise. We no longer do that. :dunno

Rally Site Volunteer Search Committee & Board Meeting Business.

I’ve looked all over the BMWMOA website and haven’t found anything that spells out the requirements for the search committee nor how to volunteer for it. Got a link?

... And here I thought the above 1/19/23 comment (post#13) would have traction within this thread. Board Meeting discussion has won out!

The only "member driven club" I've known about, is the $49 yearly due's times the thousand's of us paying them...
for the privilege of decisions made and enjoyed by those in Club Business $$$

Seems we could sure use two new Threads within the Clubhouse Forum.

We're only 40 days until Saturday closing ceremonies at the VA 50th... I could actually wait until then for the 2024 Western US announcement.

Hmmm ... I thought that member driven was in place .... allowing us ALL to vote on board members who would then represent ALL of us. Maybe it's me but as just a member that seems to work well from my seat.

But I am anxious to here the 2024 location in the WEST !! :clap

The board meeting used to be composed of two portions: executive session and public session. In exec session, we'd discuss stuff that wasn't necessarily yet appropriate for public discussion; hiring people, for example. Public session was open to the public and we often had folks come hang out and listen.

Ditto at the turn of the century when I was President and before that when I was on the Board. We did have committees that did a lot of work on the phone between the quarterly Board meetings.

Having attended several BOD meetings in the past. It was a good thing to have an open meeting portion for the membership. This lead to membership input of ideas and question. But as the BOD shrinks so does the membership ideas. Only the few have any idea where this club is going. The more Corporate it becomes the less of the MOA being a club.

Is Fargo in the western or central region? I want to know which years it wll be a possibility.
I think we're safe for now, I haven't seen any flying pigs yet.
:)

The Fargo in Dakota Territory is Central Region I believe.

The actual Flying Pig that involves Motorrad BMW's (a marathon with multiple purpose course & police motors of course) is this coming Sunday in Cincinnati,
just after the Saturday Derby... held down by the hamlet nearby Falls of the Ohio.
Different horsepower at each venue.

I report to you from the Flying Pig Irish Pub in the Hyde Park neighborhood of the Queen City.

You can almost see Fargo from a flying pig from here!
