2012 R1200RT idle/throttle problem

Lookin' for a little assistance in the "oh man, what did we do in the garage...?"

SO performed the 12k/2yr maintenance. Test rode bike, ran perfectly.

Tried sync'g throttle bodies with Carbtune.

This is where it gets sticky: adjustments were made to the throttle bodies, idle stops, & grip throttle cables (not necessarily in that order nor just performed once).

GS-911 shows idle actuators locked during sync test. Bike runs fine. Idle actuators get unlocked and the idle surges (it sounds brutal...:help).

Cannot get the idle to stop fluctuating.

How do you begin problem solving this?

Thanks for your help.

Joy

What idle stops?
There are throttle body screws that look like idle adjusters but are not meant for anything but factory use- unless you own flow gauges (which you won't) you have no way to do anything except screw up the factory setting. If messed up, its a dealer visit and possibly even replacement

You could also have a vacuum problem (are all the hoses and plugs back correctly?). Easy to overlook a plug or have a loose hose and just as easily corrected. Did it once myself when interrupted while working.

Then there is the matter of a throttle cable not being fully seated at the adjuster. They can hang on the lip. A simple fix- reseat and readjust. Cable adjustments for synch are at the throttle bodies (Generally, one uses only the right side to adjust), not the grip which is generally only for play.

Your bikes idle is entirely computer controlled and will always be correct unless something is missing or improperly adjusted. You cannot adjust idle speed, only synch. Sounds like something was messed up by not understanding that.

Once in a rare while a fairly new stepper fails but that is not in the first list of possibilities.

What you are hearing is probably the engine management computer (the BMS) trying to establish a stable, to spec, idle and failing.

It is also not possible to correctly synch a bike with valves extremely out of adjustment. I doubt this has happened because you did not mention valve adjustment which would require buying shims from a dealer if changes were made

Long term owners will tell you boxer motors properly broken in and set will hold adjustments for a very long time and rarely need touchup, despite the stated factory service interval- which is a CHECK, not an automatic adjustment.

Throttle body screws. Bummer in the summer (well technically still spring).

You were spot on. Well written and very clear.

The SO unknowingly just helped our mechanic make his first house payment, while he sips on a nice cold one :bottle

Who needs a manual?
