1992 BMW R100RT - Questions

Good day,

After spending time looking for information and coming up somewhat empty handed, thought I would turn to the Airhead Group at MOA.

Bought home a 1992 BMW R100RT that had two previous owners here in Calgary. Overall it is in nice condition on the surface but we will see once things start coming apart.

The previous owner couldn't remember where he had the riders manual, so I have started gathering the information and have started to look for a manual.

What I am looking for is a proper wiring diagram, as an example I have a hazard warning light button that doesn't work and any drawings that I have seen there is no mention of this switch.

I have started into doing the maintenance items, transmission spline, drive line splines and changing all the various oils that need to be done. The 32mm Bings will be inspected, but it runs very well and not sure if I should touch them at this point. The other thing I notices when I drained the fuel tank is that the red liner is starting to come away and would it be advisable to get the fuel tank relined?

So many questions, just like the R75/6 that I finally got back on the road and what a sweet ride!

Flip-A-Lever

I think you have a flip a lever throttle controller, nice. From what I see the bike looks to be in very good shape. Ride and enjoy. The older airhead looks good, too.

Emergency warning light switch.

The Clymer manual diagram for 1987-on R100RS & RT doesn't show a hazard light switch. The diagram for R100GS & GSPD 1990-on Frame circuit diagram does have a "Emergency warning light switch" wired into the "Turn signal & canceling unit".

I have a '92 GSPD that has one. Perhaps they were an option on the RT.

Airhead electrical in original configuration, can vary.

My '76 R90/6 had a hazard switch that I'm told was an option.(it's not on the R90/6 diagram)

There's an Airmarshal listed in Lethbridge AB.

I'm in Airhead soup down here in SoCal. I wound up joining the ABC after going to a few Tech Days.

Some of them are long time motorcyclists and enjoy passing on information learned from years of experience.

Morning Bill,

Just opened my Clymer book at the back where the R100GSPD wiring diagram is and your right, there is an Emergency Wiring Light Switch in the diagram. Interesting note that from the way it's wired, one has to press the four (4) way emergency switch and then flip the left turn signal handle bar switch to complete the circuit . Will have to investigate further once I start to to assemble the back end which is all apart for inspection and cleaning. Thank you for pointing this out!:wave
I know the air marshal in Lethbridge very well and he along with his partner of crime helped me the wiring masse on the R75/6 that I restored. Their help was beyond words and it was extremely educational!

Hey b25bsaboy

How ironic.. i too just purchased a '92 R100RT in the same color. Unfortunately, mine wont be home for a few months, but its ok, i've got other bikes to ride. In the meantime, i will follow your write up of you going through your new bike.

I don't worry about my tanks rusting much anymore. The problem was condensation water gathering in the tank bottom below the gas. Now with the ethanol gas they sell in the USA, (I'm guessing its the same in Canada) the alcohol puts the water into solution in the gas and it goes out thru the engine.. Same effect as the "dry" gas they used to use up north.
