1983 R100 RS Project

Happy Holidays everyone!

Not much going on here in New England. Bike related
Bike is now on a tender for the winter months. I don't see too many opportunities for a ride in the up coming months. Especially with the first potentially major snow storm due here Sunday. We'll see...
So I do have one questions to throw out to the group.
I've been researching USB phone chargers for the bike. Does anyone have some ideas on that?
Thanks in advance
Brian

Hello all,
Itching to get back out on the road here in New England. Just would like to see the temperatures a little warmer!
In the mean time I've been researching period correct panniers for my 83 R100RS. I see alot of variations out there and I'm really not sure what is correct.
I think the mounts are pretty straight forward. It's the hard cover bags that I see the variations.
Does anyone have good insight to what is correct or if you're in the NE area, know of anyone selling panniers.
Thanks again,

Brian

Per MAXBMW fiche 0146532315183 is the left touring case and 0146542315184 is the right side. NLA I believe. You can find them for sale used in the usual places, condition and keys may be an issue for you, good luck.

Here's what the OEM bags looked like in 1984.

Here's what the mounts looked like.
I don't remember if the RS mounts were chrome or painted black.

The parts fiche shows this bag pictured below was used in 1983 then changed in 1984 to what I showed above.

To my knowledge these are original.

Hello all,
Been putting some miles on my 83 R100RS since last fall. Definitely a different ride from my Triumph Trophy 1200. Just a really fun bike to ride!
No new updates to speak off. I have not purchased panniers yet. I will get around to that :)
I did a another valve adjustment this past Spring and found the right side exhaust valve tight.
I'm going to check the balance on the carbs this week. Haven't done that since last Fall. Everything seems fine and the bike is running great. I think.
One thing I'm looking into is the vibration of the right side mirror. Left is fine. The right vibrates a fair amount but does smooth out some at higher RPM's.
I'm wondering is it fairing mount related or are the carbs out of balance. That's my reason for checking them again. Not having ever owned a bike like this I wonder if it's the "nature of the beast" or something else.
Regards,
Brian

Likely the carbs need a bit of a tweak to get rid of the vibration. However, it might not totally work. I've heard people put a glass of water on the top of the tank and get to a point where there are no ripples in the water.

As for the tight exhaust valve...you should keep an eye on that, all the valves as well. The '81-84 models were prone to clearance disappearing as the surfaces of the valves tulip. It's like valve seat recession only the valve faces themselves take the beating. The 1000cc bikes were more prone as they put out more heat and the fairing sort of traps that heat. Not sure if that was discussed earlier in the thread.

Part of the issue with my 83 RS was that the glass kinda floated in the housing in one of my mirrors and it'd vibrate all over the place.
