1980 R100T Brake Relocation and more issues for sidecar use

My shop got my sidecar attached! :D

I'm looking to relocate my front master cylinder to the handlebar, but I don't think I can source the right parts needed.

I also need a longer bar for easier handling of the sidecar if anyone would have recommendations.

I need stronger fork springs and a beefy (or even trail reducing) triple tree too.

I am unfamiliar with what parts are compatible across different years. I appreciate all advice. Thanks.

Contact Tom Cutter at Rubber Chicken Racing Garage. Give him the last 7 digits of the VIN and explain what you’re trying to get done. He is knowledgeable and will send you a quote with the parts that you need.
 
Your thread should be in the sidecar section with regards to suspension and sidecar issues. Does your “shop” know anything about attaching a sidecar? Many don’t. There is also a good source for hack information on the Adventure Rider website in the Hacks forum. What sources have you checked for your brake parts? Try EME.

Never driven a side car rig.
How do they steer?
Do you countersteer or not?
Counterstering induces lean, but not much leaning with a sidecar I'd imagine.
Are they fun to ride in the corners or a PITA?
Just curious.

Nick -

No leaning...you drive them like a car...you want to go right, you turn the bars to the right. Without a sidecar, you want to go right you first turn the bars to the left which gets the bike leaning to the right and then you use the bars to follow through on the right turn. With a sidecar, you have to be aware of right-hand turns (in this case) as being too aggressive or too fast, the car with come off the ground. Some will put dead weight in the car if there is no passenger to help with this.

They say if you want to drive with a sidecar, you should go to an empty parking lot and practice...and practice!

They steer sort of like an ATV or snowmobile. The trouble is unlearning all of the two wheel habits as counter steering on a side car rig will land you in trouble. Check with the sidecar association, there may be a driver's course taught near you. St.

Nick,
Come to Hotchkiss, CO, this summer for the USCA National Rally 7/6-10, and experience the sidecar thing. Answers to your questions and much more.

Actually there are some sidecars classed as leaners that you do lean to steer. If a hack is set up right, they’re a joy to drive and corner very well, much like a sports car (unless you have a Ural🤔). Regarding thread drift, have you ever done a three wheeled drift?😊

Nick, they're super fun. I've had one for a few years now. Steering is closer to a 4-wheeler. Left turns are fun and right turns are carefully executed.

Yup. My dad made me ride two outfits that he had, an R69S and an R1150GS. Terrifying. Nearly went into the front door of a house on the outside of an off camber right hand turn (as the outfit leaned left I kept steering into the lean).

Run away! Run away!
