'01 R1200C Engine Vibration

Since day one, I have been experiencing
engine vibrations. These vibrations are
so bad, my left mirror distorts, my feet
slide off the foot pegs, and they come
up thru the seat.

I have taken the bike to the dealer
twice for this, and even had the BMW
Service Rep ride the bike.

The conclusion: Oh, it's normal !

I have a '99 R1200C with about the same
milage (6,000) that does not vibrate like
the 2001.

I am not new to BMW motorcycles, having
owned 11 of them.

I am asking, if anyone else has had this
experience, and what was done about it

Clearly, BMW NA is has the same
attitude about customer service they
had in 1985. When my K100RT kept
blowing the coolant out the overflow
thank. Finally, after having the bike
back to the dealer six times, it was
learned that the problem was the
flashings from the casting of the
engine block had not been cleaned out.

And of course, BMW had NEVER heard
of that before

Should be smoother

I have owned my '99 R1200 since it was new and have found that a few things can cause excessive vibration.

1. one cylindar not firing conistently--check for fouled plug
2. bad seating between throttle bodies and heads
3. oil in air box-easy to drain but messy
4. throttle bodies out of sync-if vibration is very bad this is most likely culprit.

I understand and appreciate your help.
All the service has been done by the BMW shop
in Rockford, and still the vibration persists.

BMW Customer Service is not very helpfull.
Seems to me that they do not want to keep
me as a customer.

This is the 11th BMW I've owned, and I can assure
everyone this is the LAST.
 
BMW mechanics

While most shops have highly trained and competent mechanics, they are only human and sometimes don't get it right. Have you thought about doing a thorough tune-up youself or take it to another shop. If a different shop solves the problem, then I would go back to the first and demand my money back for all the work they did that did not solve your problem. The cruiser is a big twin and will have "some" vibration as a result. But mine has never been overly annoying as yours seems to be.

Well, thanks to BMW Corp, I have found a solution to the
engine vibration problem.

TRADE THIS BIKE IN ON A HARLEY !!!

I was informed that even though the bike is under the
36month/36000 mile warranty. "A BMW Corporate decision
has been made NOT to repair your motorcycle."

Seems to me, BMW Corp is admitting to the problem of excessive
engine vibration in my '01 R1200C Phoenix, but refuses to
honor defective workmanship under the warranty.

I am leaving this here for you all to be aware of, and just maybe
you will think twice before you lay down your hard earned cash
for another BMW Motorcycle that BMW Corporate could care less
about.

Is it just me? Or do we have a lot of folks that get on here just to crank about some issue with their bike and then disappear?

Whatever happened to that guy that was griping about his LT's clutch?

I'm bummed you had a problem with your bike, but am glad you found a solution in another bike.

Over the course of this board, we've had a bunch of folks that drop in, make two posts to complain about their bike and then leave.

Again, my sincerest apologies if I've offended you.

I am very disappointed with BMW Corp attitute about this
problem. I know of others with problems that they have
turned a blind eye to. Just as they have with me. It's
really a sad day for me to move to another brand. HD
is what BMW used to be.

4k vibes

Are these the famous 4,000 RPM vibes ... lots written about them some from me. Two things here -

1) Vibes in the seat - I went to BMW's rides this Spring and rode the Montauk among others ... sure enough, the seat vibrated ! If my Roadster did this I would not tolerate it either.

2) The suggestion about 'doing it yourself' is what I finally did. I read both the valve adj. chapter at IBMWR.ORG and especially the throttle body synch - that one helped !

Nothing like taking things into your own hands, eh ?
