I’ll admit that I’m being lazy here but my new to me 99’ R11RT starter sounds ike crap after the motor has caught and started. Starter clutch? I know my batt is in decline but I don’t think that’s the total reason.
Anyone can offer a suggestion? TY

Define "sounds like crap". If it is a screetch just as the button is released then you need to remove the starter and clean the one-way clutch at the nose of the starter.

What Paul said. I clean the original starter on my '04 RT, about once every 3-4 years. 102k miles now on it. I know it's time when it appears to "drag" and squeal after releasing the starter button, engine running.

It's a straightforward job and you'll be surprised how quiet it is again.

Cleaning the starter may be all that's needed. If you decide otherwise - I replaced my starter on my 2001 R1100RT with a starter from DB Electrical. I got it last October, so It's had about 600 starts, no problems at all. Turns over very nicely. About $60. My old starter still works, I put it on the shelf as an emergency spare. I pulled it off and cleaned it many times.

Yes. A bit of a screech as starter button is released. Will clean starter as suggested. Thanks for the tip.
Cheers

Sorry to resurrect this thread so long after it was started but is it best to clean the starter clutch with spray alcohol? Or is there another preferred method...? I'm just now about to get at this.
Thanks again for the help.

I use Brake System Cleaner

Once again, sorry to resurrect this old thread but I did finally get to this today and it worked awesome. Here's a link to a youtube video (not sure what language they're speaking...) that does a pretty good job of presenting the job.....just in case anyone else happens to be chasing this squealing starter issue.

I had this exact problem last year with my R1150RTP. Removed the starter, cleaned it. and a little grease on the pinion gear shaft.
