Gear Position Sensor '05 R1200GS

The gear position sensor on my 05 GS has gone crazy. The correct gear is displayed when upshifting, but everything disappears when downshifting until I reach 1st gear. Then the neutral comes on when it's in first. It's not a big deal other than the annoyance of the neutral light, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I suppose the only fix is replacing the sensor, am I right?

Bill, please see: http://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?t=46055 - I've added the info to your thread title.

As to your question - it is most likely the sensor. One way to confirm it would be to hook it up to a GS-911, which I believe is capable of reading out what gear the sensor thinks the bike is in. The other way would be to replace it..

Unfortunately - the service manual just shows replacement with the swing-arm removed. It doesn't note if this is a required step or not - but probably if you purchased a new one you could determine if there is clearance for R&R of it without swingarm removal.
