Having owned shaft, belt and chain driven motorcycles, the importance of a center stand steps out when touring with a chain drive MC. After riding 6 to 8 hunderd miles a day, it's a real PIA to have to lube the chain at the end of the night (or during the day at the half way point) without a center stand. A previous Honda had to be moved several times forward or backward to turn the chain a full revolution, which is just not acceptable when tired from a long day in the saddle. Much easier to pop up on the center stand, and rotate the real wheel by hand while lubing the chain. I'd have to go back to a shaft drive for off road, if a center stand were not available on my F700.....
