Heated Vest Question

Does anyone know if I can operate 2 heated vests at the same time on an R1150RT or R1100RT? I have 2 Warm n Safe vests......

What are the wattage ratings on the vests? (in Watts or Amps x 12V)

You should be able to easily do so -- assuming you are not running another 300 Watts of auxiliary lighting, and a ham radio station, and a pizza oven, etc.

The civilian R11xxRT's have a (IIRC) 700W (50Ax14V) alternator. Figure 250-300Watts of hotel loads to run the bike, and you end up with a lot left over (like 25-30 amps).

Remember, that alternator rating is peak output. At idle, it won't put out as much, so a couple hours idling in a traffic jam may require you to turn off the vests to prevent killing the battery. On the other hand, while that is a real problem with a 180-280W airhead alternator, I've never encountered a real problem with extended idling on my R11xxRT's.

Another factor is the size of the wiring, and their associated fuses, to whichever accessory plugs you are connecting to. I've never had any issue with my Gerbing's vest plus gloves cranked up to max, but I'd be dubious about having two sets on the same circuit. When the insulation melts, it can get expensive quickly.

The alternator will power house loads, heated grips, and two W&S jacket liners just fine.

If you have a pair of 55w driving lights them too if on the highway. If toodling around you might need to shut something off, but even then maybe not. The W&S controller modulates the pulse width (on time) so unless turned up full blast the jackets are not pulling a full 90 watts continuous.

You should install a dedicated, fused circuit directly to the battery so that you are not depending on small OEM wiring to power the jackets.

We regularly power 90w x 2 vests, 100w x 2 aux lights, plus the 55w x 2 stock fogs and the main beam (55w) with no issues. I've even run the grips and heated pants liners at the same time with no issues...

Seems like a lot. What about the coffee maker ?

Don't laugh -- I know a good chef who carries a coffee machine (expresso? - can't remember) in his tail trunk on every trip! :drink

I traveled in Mexico with a guy who had a coffee maker in his tail box. That's why I mentioned the coffee maker.
