Source for a final drive on a 2014 1200 RT

I have a friend's 2014 1200RT on the lift. Unfortunately, he somehow stripped the head out of the drain bolt, then tried an easy out and broke it off inside the bolt head.

We removed the final drive. He took it to a machine shop, and they cannot get it out either!

I found two used ones on eBay, but they are coming off police bikes (concerns about wear & tear). Any other source that may have final drives available?

Off the bike? That would be a luxury!
I agree with jandhumphreyme. Find a shop that doesn’t mind and has experience with unusual problems.
I recently extracted a broken bolt in a wood chipper drum that nobody really could figure out/wanted to try removing. The dealer told the owner they usually replace the drum at a cost of $9,000.00 :eek

I don't quite understand the issue, either. The final drive body is made of relatively soft aluminum. The EZout might have bored thru the drain bolt (are they aluminum or steel?) and into the body of the drive, hence the resistance and broken EZ out. I wonder if someone had replaced that bolt with something other than the OEM bolt (and/or, forgot to add the washer!).

In any case, I'd be drilling the bolt out and tapping new threads by myself, before I replaced an otherwise good final drive. (Yeah, I know, trying to drill and tap out in aluminum could be a challenge, even impossible. But I've blundered into doing the impossible a few times in my life.) Heck, I'll bet a shop could even drill the whole fitting out, and put in something like a helicoil.

Find a new machine shop, or a good auto speed shop. I think one major reason shops would shy away from this project is the risk of damaging the inner final drive components. Disassembled, i.e. presenting them an empty case or case-half, and there's no risk of them doing damage to the drive.
 
(y) I appreciate the opinion of those who know how to proceed with drilling out or tapping in a new hole and then a helicoil. This highly reputable machine shop in North Carolina builds NASCAR engines. The easy out is not coming out as easily as you all anticipate. The risk is damage to the internals or even the case body itself. So, we have already decided to proceed and see what happens after we get a second opinion from another machine shop.

But the question was: does anyone have a good source for a used final drive? Thank you, Seaweed, for mentioning Motorcycle Guys. One is on the way to get us back on the road until we figure out what to do with the other.

No worries, not poor advice. I just had been there already and had a different question. I typically don't ask too many questions on forums due to answers given not pertaining to the question and sarcastic responses. I could do better by passing over those and picking out the answers to my questions. I guess we all could do better on these forums. But SeaWeed's "Motorcycle Guys" worked out for me. Take care.
 
Perhaps a lesson here for all of us. IIRC, the fill plug and the drain plug are different drives, allen/hex and torx. It pays to to get down on the ground and get an eyeball on that drain plug with your tools in reach. Remove the fill plug first, before you drain.
Torque to spec when done.

Yes, my friend is upset with himself for stripping out the head of the bolt, which started the spiral downward for him. That bolt requires a t40 plus. A regular t40 will work, and most use that, but after a while, you find yourself in the same situation if you are not careful. :oops:

I bought a T40 Plus for the drain but found it was too loose. A T45 Plus would not fit.
A regular T45 was a good snug fit.
 
I stand corrected. It is a T45 Plus it takes. I just went out to the garage after seeing "lee" post. I have the entire set and commented without looking at what I use. But, it is the T45 Plus. But, use whatever fits you. BMW dealer mechanic told me the same thing and showed me the difference between the two.

Out of curiosity what brand do you have?
Mine is OTC.
I'm not in the shop but have a Neiko Torx Plus set. I only use the one out of the set for the drain plug. I haven't found use for the others yet. You had me thinking, so I called BMW and talked with a tech. He said it was the T40 Plus. I'll verify that later this evening when I get home. Your photo earlier does look like a Torx Plus. I'll stick with what the tech recommends. It works for me.
