2007 R1200RT alternator belt question

Howdy everyone.

I've got an 2007 R1200RT (date on the plate says 0507) and I'm confused about the alternator belt.

Supposedly, a Contitech 4PK582 belt is the correct one, but I ordered a couple and installed one without checking too carefully. Went riding, and it appears the the belt walked off the pulley, got caught behind the crankshaft pulley and damaged the oil seal, as there is oil now in that space.

I looked at the other new belt more carefully and I realized that even though the package stated multi-V belt, the ribs are flat, not V like the oem belt that I took off.

So, annoyed that I didn't check carefully enough, I started looking for a replacement belt. According to the parts fiche, it's supposed to have a belt part # 11 31 8 528 385, but the belt I took off (which, as far as I know was original from the factory - the bike just turned 37000 miles, I bought it with 34000) is part # 12 31 7 690 571 (it's printed on the belt as 12.31-7690 571). It also has printed on it 4 PK 582, which just annoys me more.

I went looking for the belt using both part #s. I found an ebay seller with a BMW OEM belt # 12 31 7 681 841, which they claim is a match for 12 31 7 690 571 and 4PK592.

Wunderlichamerica.com claims that their 4PK592 is the correct fit for my bike, stating that the actual Contitech part # is 4PK592(582).

I'm just trying to find out which belt I should be using so I can get the right one.

TLDR; the belt apparently installed at the factory is 12 31 7 690 571, but the parts fiche says it should be 11 31 8 528 385.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would use the BMW belt, click bait got ya

EuroMotoElectrics in Denver has the correct belt for your 07 RT. Their part number: Belt-4PK582385. When I replaced mine in Feb. 2022, it cost $26.00.

Alas, they are out of stock. I did order the oil seal from them. I wound up going to Capital Cycle in DC area for the belt. Funny enough, Capital had no clue what I was talking about when I asked for the seal, even though I gave them the BMW part #.

So I got the belt that I ordered from Capital Cycle, and it's exactly the same belt I already had.
I've attached a picture showing the old belt vs the new belt. The old belt has deep V ribs, and the new one has flat ribs. In fact, the belt shown on EuroMotoElectrics web site is the same.
I guess I'm going to have to call around and see if any nearby dealers have the belt in stock and I'll need to go take a look at it. I'm not convinced now that I didn't mess up installing the new belt and it wasn't on correctly leading to the failure.

So I drove up to MAX BMW in New Milford, CT, and looked at the actual BMW part. It is NOT the same as the ContiTech 4PK582, even though that # is printed on the belt. The BMW part has the BMW part # printed on it, and had deep V ribs on it.

This is the actual BMW belt:

This picture isn't great, but it shows the deep V ribs on the BMW belt:

The top (flat) belt is the 4PK582 I was sent by Capital Cycle with a sticker on the cardboard with the BMW part #:

Needless to say, I'll be returning the belts to Capital Cycle.

Glad to see you have the right belt, it is bazaar how a simple belt can vary so much,
I service my machines and I love to see capable riders service their machines, it changes the relationship of man & machine from ownership to partnership

I 2011 R1200RT just got putting belt on this week my part number is 4pk592
Compare the belt to the one that is on the bike. Make sure the grooves are V shaped, not flat. I discovered that 4PK592 (or 4PK582) is a generic belt numbering system. 4PK means it's a 4 groove metric (the P) automotive belt (the K). The 582/592 is the length of the belt in MM. It does NOT mean that the belt has the correct type of grooves.

The 4PK582 I used had the flat grooves, walked off the pulley while I was driving, got wrapped up in the crankshaft and destroyed the oil seal.

I've been working on my bikes since I got my first one back in 1981. I don't do everything, as I don't have a workshop that's really big enough, but I do what I can :)

I may have put the wrong belt on my 2011 R1200RT
It only takes a few minutes to correct luckily

I was just about to replace mine. Now I have to check and see if I have the correct replacement belt. Thanks for the info!
