Rear Rack and Top Case for BMW R1100R

My "new to me" 1999 R1100R Special Edition arrived on Thursday and I had the Givi 635F, M3, and V46 ready to go on. One problem - the charcoal canister was in the way. So, I thought I would move it out of the way to see if it would fit properly if I were to remove the canister. Unfortunately, the alignment of the side cases was "off" because of the thickness of the 635F brackets. The side case mounts move out about 1/4", but the footpeg part that the side cases slide into do not move and so the alignment was bad and the side cases wouldn't fit. So it all went back already and I started searching again.

It appears there's a Hepco & Becker "rear rack" but I'm nervous it too might have a conflict with either the canister or the side case mounts. Awaiting email from them.

The only "sure thing" solution I can come up with is to find a used (or new) OEM rear luggage rack and then use either a Hepco & Becker or Givi top case with universal mount.

Anyone have any other ideas (or a used BMW OEM rear luggage rack)?

Thanks,
Ron

Congrats on recognizing "the ugly duckling" and getting an R1100R...I think is has way more character than either the overdone monster bikes(Ducati's in particular) or the saturated retro bikes(Triumph/HD). I love mine and plan many mods.

As for your storage issues...you might as well go to stock BMW mounts because the R1100R is an orphan and so many aftermarket manufacturers skip our bike when making parts and accessories. I just got turned onto Shad top cases, they are designed(made?) in Barcelona Spain and they are a tad cheaper than Givi yet have better fit and finish. Check out this set up by jmckeown.

Givi top case on a r1100r

Ron,

I wrestled with the same thing and finally sourced a Givi rack and V46 Top Case with help from RevZilla. The thing is, the carbon can had to go. Online searches seemed to indictate that loosing the can is a good idea anyway. The Givi stuff bolted right on and works with the factory side cases, though I don't really use them anymore. It's good to know I can.

I also added a LED light kit from Admore Lighting that has running, brake, and turn signal. I put a Givi back rest on and a BMW emblem. I get lots of use out of it and the V46 Tech looks OEM. For some reason I am not abe to upload a photo on this thread but I'd be happy to email one.

Dave

Long story short - I tried the Givi but found out the hard way it wouldn't attach with the Charcoal Canister on. I moved it out of the way and even had some alignment problems with the stock side case racks and gave up. It appears that ROW R1100R (no can) and no side cases might work fine. Or maybe using Givi side mounts and cases...

Anyway, the solution I went with is to get "the last" OEM stock luggage rack and mounting hardware for $270 net (10% off) and then the top case with universal mount (plate bolts to rack, case to plate).

Thanks,
Ron

Bringing back this old thread. Enjoyed my R1100R this past year and now that riding season is coming to a close (unreal how long it stretched this year), I'm again doing "research" to keep me busy.

I ended up finding a closeout price on an OEM R1100R rear luggage carrier (rack). Then I mounted the Givi universal plate to it and put a V46 on. But I'm still not happy with it and long for a BMW solution.

I found the R1100RT retrofit plate for mounting the 33l topcase and wonder if anyone has experience putting this on top of the R1100R luggage carrier?

I've asked some of the big parts dealers and nobody really knows.

Thanks,

No Joy... But found a great option that's working perfectly. Hepco & Becker topcase with an R1100R specific bracket that bolts right up to the OEM Luggage Rack. If you don't have one, they have a different bracket that replaces the rear handle. Great OEM quality in the H&B topcase, reasonable price. Very happy.

The mounting of the two luggage rack plates to the system case rails looks substantially different and I don't think it will work without some fairly creative fabricating of an adapter. ref # 3 provides the rear support for the plate on the RS and RT models, and the front mounting screws are up at the corners with two screws per side.
