BMW motorcycle announces the entrance for the year 2009 into the Superbike world championship.

Munich. BMW motorcycle opens a new chapter in the road racing commitment. Peter M??ller, Leiter development and series BMW motorcycle, on that Paris motorcycle fair Mondial you Deux Roues on Friday, 28 September: ÔÇ£2007 returned BMW motorcycle after over 50 years with the Sportboxer to international road racing. In 2008 we will continue the long-distance commitment. At the same time we will prepare intensively for the entrance into the Superbike world championship in 2009.ÔÇØ

Closer information given to motorcycle concept and team structure to a later time admits.

Speech by Dr. Herbert Diess, leader BMW motorcycle, international motorcycle fair ÔÇ£Mondial you Deux RouesÔÇØ, Paris, 28 September 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am called you cordially welcomely to our press conference here in Paris.
Three things are located today here in the center:
ÔÇó First the current paragraph numbers of the first eight months of the yearly.
ÔÇó We present to you in addition, in who direction it will continue with BMW motorcycle and like we the future challenges will meet.
ÔÇó Then we show you naturally our newest product.

Let me with the current paragraph numbers begin. We already put our goals to beginning of the year:
We want to deliver in this year more motorcycles to our customers than ever before. That is a fastidious goal, because in the year 2006 we already broke through a sound barrier with more than 100,000 sold motorcycles.
To at the end of August are we well on the way. Also over 75.000 sold units we sold 5 per cent more motorcycles in the comparison to the same period of the previous year. We are confident that we will achieve our goal up to the year end.
We achieved a special goal in this year already. Since 2004 we already delivered over 100.000 R1200 gs. Thus the large Reiseenduro is most successful BMW motorcycle of all times.
Even if these numbers let us look optimistically into the future, it is completely clear us that the surrounding field is difficult and remains difficult for the entire European motorcycle industry probably.
How will BMW motorcycle the future master and far profitable will grow?
We will continue our model offensive, which we began in 2004, consistently. Only over new desire-worth products we will succeed additional customers to respond.
With 17 new models, which we brought since 2004 on the market, our product range was almost completely renewed in only three years. The main focus was thereby on the complete renewal of our kernel program, like the Boxermodelle gs and blank or the route he and sport route he models of the K-series.
Beyond that we opened new segments for BMW, in order to address additional customer groups. Thus in the past year the middle class models F800 S and ST were introduced. Likewise we developed a completely new generation of a cylinder motorcycles: The particularly easy and agile G650 X series with three models.
A further novelty we present to you today in the connection.
And already in some weeks we can present you still further new models.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
They see, we continue our model offensive with BMW motorcycle in high speed.
In order to expand and additionally accelerate our growth possibilities since further segments, we decided to a two-mark strategy and Husqvarna Motorcycles acquired.
With the Husqvarna models we can expand the offer faster since younger buyer categories as well as since the entire Offroad and Supermoto range, than alone with our Kernmarke. Besides we can use the world-wide sales network work immediately of Husqvarna in the Offroad segment.
Husqvarna ranks among the most steeped in tradition motorcycle marks world-wide and to today numerous world records and racer sequence brought in. Also in the year 2007 Husqvarna registers outstanding racing results. They lead in the 450er class of the Supermoto WM and mix together also in the open class completely in front. Also in the Enduro WM they brought some beautiful successes in in this year already.
To model year 2008 the model program was strongly revised. The models among other things clearly more easily and diminish, have an optimized ergonomics and are now equipped with fuel injection.
Thus they become still more fair the good reputation in the sport world. We are convinced that Husqvarna the potential has the prominent off Road mark to become.
And with this second mark we can grow now also in segments, in which we were so far not represented. Because if we want to be on a long-term basis successful, further profitable growth is crucial.
A special challenge for us as a European manufacturer is thereby the currency relation to the Japanese Yen. Since the year 2000 it lost opposite the euro around almost 70% at value. Japanese manufacturers can use the rate of exchange advantage doubly. On the one hand they can act over low prices in the market very aggressively and be able to do at the same time them their profits to optimize. The clearance of our Japanese main competitors becomes constantly larger thereby.
What do we do, in order to remain competitive here?
ÔÇó First of all we improve naturally the productivity in our work in Berlin and with our suppliers.
ÔÇó Secondly we expand our purchase activities world-wide, in order to compensate in particular the currency shifts.
ÔÇó Thirdly we set on our special strengths. Strengths, which differentiate us clearly from the competition. Those are the outstanding quality and the technical as well as emotiona le differentiation of our products.

An example is the introduction of the slip regulation as innovative feature, which offers clearly more active security. Here we have at present an however position on the market.
Another example is the new 2-Zylinder-Motor of our F-series. It offers the highest torque of its class, with smallest weight and lowest values consumed.
I can announce to you today that we will offer already very soon further models with this power supply unit.
Examples of the further emotional loading of our mark are the HP models. HP stands thereby for compromiseless high-quality technology for particularly fastidious Motorradfahrer.
With the HP 2 Enduro we introduced 2006 the first Superenduro off road of the world. 2007 were added the HP2 Megamoto. It is the lightest and agilste Boxer for the kurvige highway. Today we will present a further model of the HP row to you.
First I may summarize however:
I presented three large components, with which we want to be successful at the market and grow profitable to you.
ÔÇó The continuation of the product offensive
ÔÇó The consistent product strategy as ÔÇ×two-mark strategy ÔÇ£
ÔÇó And our further competition strategy

They expect however today rightfully not only a report over our business activity and a view into the future of BMW motorcycle, but also a strong novelty.
We have those naturally thereby. I presented to you initially our model offensive and thus our project, also in the sport segment a BMW offer to platzieren we thus now present to you a motorcycle, which will inspire the true Boxerfan.
It is the HP 2 ÔÇ×sport ÔÇ£.
Highest requirements at technology and handling characteristics, the reduction on the substantial distinguish motorcycles with the additive HP. We developed a motorcycle, which does not only make a good figure on the racing course with the HP2 sport, but also on the road.
Now our development boss, Mr. Peter M??ller, will in more detail represent all details to our new product to you.
I thank you for your attention and wish you much fun on the motorcycle fair here in Paris.

Au revoir!

Speech by Peter M??ller, Leiter development and series BMW motorcycle, international motorcycle fair ÔÇ£Mondial you Deux RouesÔÇØ, Paris, 28 September 2007

My very much admired ladies and gentlemen,

today I would like to present a completely special motorcycle, the HP2 sport, the road version of our Rennboxers to you.

With the use of prototypes of the HP2 sport with international running meetings we wanted to prove the competitive ability of this motorcycle promptly and show to which performance our Boxer are able.
Were simultaneous run-in-corrode an also integral and substantial component of our development process.

According to our definition of HP, High performance stands for the sporty achievement thought and the efficiency of the entire vehicle and not primarily only for maximum engine performance.

And that an air-cooled concept pushes here to natural borders and cannot reach the rated output of water-cooled engines, it is sufficiently well-known.
Therefore the vehicle - series such as running vehicle - a total concept cut particularly to the targeted application is the basis.

The performance is thus reached by means of the total interpretation, weight, rating of the engine in combination with a outstanding chassis and perfect brakes.

And the running placements in Le Mans and in Oschersleben (if necessary Magny Cours) showed, what is in our concept.

For the customers, who would like to after-experience, it becomes the HP2 sport, which gives to road-certified version of the Rennboxers.

It is produced in an exclusive small series with almost all high-quality components, which distinguish also the running motorcycle.

I would like particularly to emphasize five features:
- the self-supporting tail from carbon fiber
- the high speed brake assembly with the radially bolted mono block brake calipers
- the Dashboard, as it is used only in the MotoGP
- the switching assistant
- the new DOHC cylinder heads with direct Ventilbet?ñtigung.

The tail from carbon fiber, in whose self-supporting construction the driver's seat is integrated, is singular in the building of series motorcycles and for the first time in this form for the series one converts.

The entire unit weighs only 2.5 kg.
In relation to a conventional aluminum construction we reach thereby a weight reduction by 2,1 kg or 46%.
The further chassis components are modified series components from R 1200 S. like easy and torsionally stiff, the Paraleverschwinge and the further developed Telelever.
At both wheel controls very high-quality ?ûhlins components are used.
The Telelever has a changed binding for the radially bolted brake pliers.
The high speed mono block brake calipers come from the company Brembo and are equipped with four Bremskolben.
The brake disk diameter amounts to 320 mm in front.
At the rear wheel the a disk brake system is used from R 1200 S with 265 mm in diameter.

As special equipment easy sport is available the ABS from R 1200 S, which we adapted for the sporty targeted application.
For the employment on the round distance the ABS can be switched off.
Likewise directly from racing we took over two further features, the Dashboard and the switching assistant.

We decided, thus with the Dashboard for a Dashboard of 2D-Systems the manufacturer, that supplies also teams for the MotoGP.

Beside the usual announcements for the road enterprise it supplies additionally a multiplicity of storable information, which is selectable for additional evaluation to the driver with on the racing course.

The switching assistant almost makes fast shifting possible up without clutch and without traction power interruption, by taking the firing angle back for the shifting process briefly and fades out injection.

The switching assistant can be reequipped also on a switching reversal.
So far the cylinder heads of our Rennmaschine were a strictly guarded secret.
For the first time since the legendary king wave running engines R-S 54 from the 50's has a cylinder head with two cam shafts lying above with the HP2 sport now a Boxer again.

Our technical designers found an elegant constructional solution for a direct Ventilbet?ñtigung.

The horizontal arranged cam shafts steer to it one inlet and each an exhaust valve.

The Ventilbet?ñtigung been made thereby by from the K 1200 S admitted light and rigid rocker finger.

Conical polished cams and a radial valve arrangement in the cylinder head make the optimization possible of the sucking in ways with this construction while maintaining the horizontal Gasf??hrung in the cylinder head.
The drive of both cam shafts is made by a fine-linked chain.

We are particularly proud that we could reduce the overall height of the cylinder head despite DOHC control by 10 mm compared with the today's double-piston engines.

The new valve impulse makes a higher filling and a higher mechanical firmness possible.

The Boxer turns thus reliably over 9.000 rpm. The border number of revolutions is with 9.500 rpm, which rated output reached with 8.750 rpm.
The further modifications at the engine opposite the past 1200er engines concern the chain guide to the cylinder heads and the adjustments in the crank case for larger engine performance and the higher numbers of revolutions.
And for weight reasons for the first time light Zylinderkopfhauben are used from carbon fiber with exchangeable Schleifpads into series.

The engine periphery, thus digital engine electronics (not data conditions), the butterfly valves and the suction plant come from R 1200 S.

The intake snorkel was modified and the inlet channels is worked on, in order to be able to achieve the air volume necessary for engine performance.

The elbow unions of the exhaust system are shifted for inclination and aerodynamics reasons under the oil pan.

The final muffler was integrated optically into the self-supporting carbon tail.
The exhaust system was provided with a flap system, in order to optimize so the achievement and the sound.

Of course also the exhaust system of the HP2 sport is equipped with a three-way catalyst and undercuts clearly the legal EU-3 of limit values.

The engine performance of the series motorcycle amounts to 98KW and/or 133PS
A value, which guarantees the necessary performance, without to the reliability of the air-cooled engine reductions had to be made.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the time is not sufficient unfortunately, in order to be received on the many further, fine detailed solutions, at this motorcycle.
To mention I would like only the milled fork bridge, the adjustable steering wheel stubs, as well as the milled and adjustable fussrasten, as well as the extremely easy lining completely from carbon fiber material.

Take yourselves afterwards the time to look at the motorcycle at very close range and in the detail.

For questions we are to you naturally at the disposal.

Before you turn however the HP2 to sport, we would like to make still another important announcement the future road racing activities of BMW motorcycle.
For this already by you in the apron one speculated much.

In 2008 we will participate with our HP2 sport in further Endurance classical authors.

Starting from 2009 we will then break however a new chapter open in road racing for BMW motorcycle.

BMW motorcycle will enter into 2009 with its own team into the World super Bike.
About further details such as motorcycle concept and team structure we will inform you at a later time.

BMW motorcycle on the Mondial you Deux Roues 2007.
New BMW HP2 sport.

M??nchen. Additionally to the most extensive and most varied model program of enterprise history BMW presents motorcycle on the Mondial you Deux Roues 2007 into of Paris a fascinating world novelty: BMW HP2 sport.

In the course of the yearly 2007 that became with the use of prototypes
HP2 sport with international running meetings impressively demonstrates, of which performance of these Boxer is capable. At the same time placed these run-in-corrode also to integrals and a substantial component of the development process.

That now third model of the HP model row - which sportiest, strongest and at the same time lightest series Boxer of all times - for the ambitionierten sport driver one conceived. It inspires by numerous exclusive details, which found so far only in racing use and hold introduction partially for the first time into the series construction of vehicles.

Even basic tail from carbon fiber.
The tail from carbon fiber, in whose even basic construction the driver's seat is integrated, is singular in the building of series motorcycles and in this form for the series is for the first time converted.

High speed brake assembly.
The radially bolted high speed mono block brake calipers come from the company Brembo and are equipped with four Bremskolben.

Racing Dashboard.
Directly from motorcycle racing was taken over the Dashboard, which in co-operation with the renowned company 2D of system was developed.

Switching assistant.
The switching assistant almost makes fast shifting possible up without clutch and without traction power interruption, by taking the firing angle back for the shifting process briefly and fades out injection.

New DOHC cylinder heads with direct Ventilbet?ñtigung.
For the first time since the legendary king wave running engines from the 50's now a Boxer has again a cylinder head with two cam shafts lying above with the HP2 sport. Particularly to emphasize it is here that despite the DOHC control the overall height of the cylinder head could be reduced by 10 mm, i.e. the width of building of engines is smaller thereby than with the past Boxern. The engine performance of the series motorcycle amounts to 98KW and/or 133PS.

The HP2 sport inspires beyond that by exclusive details like the milled fork bridge, adjustable steering wheel stubs, milled and adjustable fussrasten as well as the extremely easy lining completely from carbon fiber material.

BMW HP2 sport comes to beginning of season 2008 on the market, the price is not certain.

Holy crap are you up early

or just really late

in my case it happens to be REALLY REALLY LATE

ah, NYC:hungover :thumb

(dang, i kinda personally dug the dual round headlight on the race R12S)

Just what are we all doing up so EARLY? :)

Coffee with M1ka! Then up to the Catskills, baby!

Thanks for the reads, John! :thumb

Less shifting?

Notice, further models in the F-Series. Maybe the GS model and maybe an R model.

Looks as though adjusting the valves on that puppy would be a booger!

Bubba, I was up a bit late, now a neighbor has me up early.

When I look over this mornings post I must apologize for the hack job on the text portion. The original text is in German. I translated it using Google translator and a portion of an excellent bottle of Jameson (courtesy of Tessler. :thumb, :thumb).

A bit of Morning Reads business ÔÇô Family life is happening in Lilydale this weekend. The tribe (4 adults and 5 grandchildren) is descending on my normally quiet condo. There will be no Sunday post. I will post Monday if I survive.

WOW!

DOHC on a BMW Boxer! Not the first time this has been done, mind you. ÔÇ£So far the cylinder heads of our Rennmaschine were a strictly guarded secret. For the first time since the legendary king wave running engines R-S 54 from the 50's has a cylinder head with two cam shafts lying above with the HP2 sport now a Boxer again.ÔÇØ

The power potential for this engine as designers, tunners and others develop it will be fun to see. ÔÇÿThe Boxer turns thus reliably over 9.000 rpm. The border number of revolutions is with 9.500 rpm, which rated output reached with 8.750 rpm.ÔÇØ Reliability was key to the endurance setting this engine has competed in so far. With over 9,000 rpm to work with from a DOHC engine I wonder what can be expected from a sprint racer?

The performance nature of this bike makes the switching assisted gearbox a natural to mainstream into the production model. Anyone willing to part with the currency that will be required to get one of these will be riding it very aggressively. For the rest of us these developments at BMW are something to pay attention to. How the gears are stirred on the motorcycle of the future is going to be hot area of development for many reasons.

The self supporting carbon fiber tail section looks to be a very good application of the materials strength and weight advantages to offset the various bits raised to increase the cornering ground clearance for the DOHC setup.

At the other end of the body work I have to agree with Bubba. I had grown accustomed to the twin headlight setup on the endurance racer and was waiting to see what the production version would look like. This is not what I expected.

We are going to have fun noodling our way around the pictures, features list and data panel of this bike!

BMW IS GOING SBK RACING

The rumors of a superbike model were confirmed. Now the speculation about will go into to high gear. For me this is a fun bummer. I am going to spend the 2008 SBK season getting ready to cover BMWÔÇÖs SBK effort in 2009.

ON TO MILAN

The next big European show is Milan where I suspect there will be more unveilings from BMW. With the acquisition of Husqvarna going full steam ahead Milan is a logical place to unveil several models we have been waiting for.

F800GS ÔÇô This did not make the Paris appearance many of us wanted. I suspect we will see it in Milan where the focus will be more dirt oriented in HusqvarnaÔÇÖs backyard.

BMW 450 ÔÇô The press releases at the end of the WEC season made it clear that BMW is pleased with this bike. The releases made it abundantly clear that this is going to be a production bike. Will a fast tracked production prototype make a debut in Milan?

BMW 650ÔÇÖs ÔÇô Will BMWÔÇÖs plan for this model range clear up? What will the addition of a 800GS and a 450 to the lineup mean for this group beyond what we have seen in the X model range?
