I'm a veteran BMW rider but just got a 1997 R850R
Didn't come with an op manual.

Whats the recommended tire pressure
and what aftermarket oil filters are available?

Anything else I should know?

I usually run 36psi on front, 42psi rear.. also, psi may be dependent on what tires you have.

Could you share some more details…

Mileage?
was it garaged?
Has the HES been replaced/ upgraded?
Tire age and condition?


IIRC, these were essentially a R1100, but with 850 jugs. These were relatively rare in the states. I think they make a nice roadster, and if as reliable as my 1100 oilhead, and nice ride.

You could treat it just like an R1100R. There’s a factory repair manual online in several places. It covers the R1100R, RT, RS, and GS.

Look around for the Mahle oil, air and fuel filters. They are OEM equivalent.
If your 850R takes the same oil filter as the RT, get the Mahle OC91D. It’s the BMW filter with the bag of appropriate crush washers included. Same as what BMW sells as the oil filter kit.
