Above: Darlington's downtown
A registered National Historic District, appropriately acknowledged for the architectural and cultural gem that it is. It is truly the pearl of the Pecatonica. A paved walking path follows the Pecatonica River from the Black Bridge Park to Riverside Park, and is lighted for your evening walk.

Below: Lafayette County Courthouse.
The Courthouse was built between 1905 and 1907 at a total cost of $136,556.17. When Mr. Matt Murphy from Benton, Wisconsin, died in 1903, he bequested that 70% of his estate be used toward the construction of a County Courthouse. Today, Lafayette County has the distinction of having the only Courthouse still in use in the United States that was for paid solely by one man. Lafayette County is also the home of Wisconsin's first State Capitol located just outside Belmont, Wisconsin. This Capitol and Supreme Court building were in use only once during the 1836 session before the Capitol moved to Madison.

Monroe Wisconsin's Central Business District

An outstanding example of a New England square transplanted to 19th Century Wisconsin.
The center of the business district is the courthouse square which contains the Green County Courthouse. The courthouse square is enclosed on all four sides by a virtually unbroken wall of 19th and 20th century commercial buildings. These buildings, taken together with the courthouse, comprise a single urban element of remarkable scale and visual quality. It should be regarded an an historic asset of highest value, perhaps the finest commercial-courthouse square of the Midwest. The entire central business district in Monroe was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Minhas Craft Brewery
Since 1845
Monroe, Wisconsin
Oldest continually operating brewery in Wisconsin, and one of the two oldest in the USA. Tours are offered every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11a.m., 1p.m. and 3p.m.

Minhas Craft Brewery, formerly Huber Brewery brews Huber Premium Beer, Wisconsin Club, Rockhead, Rhinelander Original, Berghoff, Mountain Creek Classic Lager and Bloomer soda.

History: The brewery began in 1845 -- three years before the state of Wisconsin was formed -- as Monroe Brewing Company. It retained that name for about 40 years before it was sold and renamed Blumer's Brewing Company.

During Prohibition the name changed again to Blumer's Product Company, before changing back to Blumer's Brewing Company when Prohibition was repealed.

In 1947 the brewery was sold to Joseph Huber and renamed the Joseph Huber Brewing Company. It's stayed that way for the past 59 years.

For the past four years Minhas has brewed and packaged his brands in Monroe, with more than 80 percent of the brewery's production getting exported to Canada.

And what goes best with Beer? Cheese. of course!

Monroe is known as the Swiss Cheese Capital of the U.S.A.

Monroe has over one dozen cheese factories in the area. I stopped at the Alp and Dell Factory for a hunk on Fontina for the Ride on The Cheese Country Trail. Alp and Dell specializing in gruyere, fontina, butterkase, and havarti cheese. Self-guided tours through an observation hallway - best time is 9am-1pm.

Monroe offers a savory history lesson in the art of cheese and beer making set against a backdrop of small-town charm and European heritage.

The longest operating cheese store in Wisconsin, Baumgartner Cheese Store and Tavern on the west side of the square, endures as the quintessential tavern where you can get a Beer and limburger-with-onion-on-rye sandwich.
