Twist protection? Rubber blocks in cylinder head

The other day I was checking the valve clearances on my Camhead and I'd never noticed these rubber blocks before, since they're located down at the bottom of the head, but one of them fell out while I had the cam-cover off. They're non-moving parts held in place by nothing but their own shape being trapped by surrounding parts. I figured they were some sort of vibration-damper or sumpn'n, and an online parts-fiche calls them, in typical Germanic vagueness, 'twist protection.' Anybody know what they actually do?
