Transmission Spline Lube?

I bought a 2000 R1100RS with 62,000 miles. The seller said the 60K mile service had been performed by the dealer he bought it from. In replacing the battery last week, I pulled the air filter and noticed it was pretty dirty for a filter with supposedly 2,000 miles on it. My question is whether I should trust that a spline lube had been performed at around 40K? Should I go ahead and do this service now (going to attempt it myself) or would it be okay to wait 10K or 15K miles? Obviously, it wouldn't hurt to do it again even if it had previously been done - but it seems like a pretty major service so I don't want to be treading in to the area of fixing what's not broken...

Not sure if this is relevant to the spline lube or not, but I've had 1st gear pop out of gear two or three times in the last month. Not sure what that's telling me, but it can't be good...

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Unless you can get the copy from the PO of the invoice showing what the dealer did I would seriously consider doing the spline lube myself. You can sort of see a limited view of the area by pulling the starter, holding the clutch lever down and looking into the area with a light to see if any grease is visible. I looked at my copy of the maintenance schedule, no where did I see spline lube on the list, I have to admit that the dealer may have a different list than the consumer sees.

As far as I know a spline lube is not part of scheduled maintenance even though it should be. I blame the moto-rags (magazines) for this. Every few years one of them does a comparison of the costs for all the "scheduled" maintenance of various model motorcycles for the first 100,000 miles or somesuch. Why would BMW want to add a few thousand dollars to their costs for these comparisons? (End of conspiracy theory :banghead )

Jumping out of gear probably indicates a problem internal to the transmission but make sure the linkage is operating properly to fully engage 1st gear before concluding the transmission needs to be removed and repaired or replaced. If the linkage is fine then the problem is either worn dogs or a worn or bent shift fork in the transmission.

That is the bad news. The good news is that doing a spline lube becomes a routine part of the process of removing and reinstalling the transmission.

I had trouble shifting before the shaft went totally.
Then it just spun and I sat waiting for the tow truck.

Spline lube..

You really have to remove the transmission to do a spline lube,,what the average dealer cost .

I have a 2002 1150RT. The mileage for this privilege of owning a BMW was 28+k miles.
It cost about $2k but I think I had other stuff done at the same time.
I dropped in to see it and it was like walking into ICU to visit a loved one.

I have to say that it still shifts great. I am approaching 96k miles.

Wow

That's crazy,,almost half of what I paid for the bike, hopefully the original owner did it twice am hoping ,he did do a lot of his own work.
