Went to order some BMW 20-50w oil for the old GS yesterday, talk about sticker shock. $ 110 for a 12 pack. Problem is, I am unsure if I want to change brands.:blush

Is that for synthetic (I've never actually see BMW brand oil). My local BMW dealer sells Motul synthentic at over $20.00/litre. I save a few bucks by buying Mobil1 V-Twin at Canadian Tire for $16.00/litre. So, I get 5 oil changes using Mobil1 for the price of 4 using Motul.

BMW must think we are suckers. There are plenty of just-as-good oils in the $5/quart
range, or even less as long as you change it regularly. Maybe sneak some Valvoline
into old BMW bottles so the bike doesn't know you're so cheap. :D
(I learned that trick bar tending!)

What is that old saying?-" A sucker for every deal?" :nono They have a glass encased "room" full of bargains just like that one in the BMW dealer near you!

$16.00/LITRE?! I can buy Mobil 1 V-Twin for about $8 to $9 per quart at the local AutoZone. Even with different Canadian/U.S. $ exchange rates that sounds like a hard-to-swallow difference. How can that be? Do you have some kind of "oil tax" in Canada?

I've used Castrol as recommended in the owners manual for years. $3 + per quart at Wal-Mart.

That's a lot for the non-synthetic as others have stasted.

I pay $10 for a qt of the 10-50w synthetic stuff. Most quality syns are in the $9-12 range now.

BMW knows there's a sucker born every minute. I mean, look at the 2004 election.
I'm just sayin....:blush

I gave up on Mobil 1 and started using Amsoil 20w50 synthetic which I buy through a co-worker who is a reseller. I pay less than $9 per litre.

Unless it has changed BMW's oil is bottled by Spectro, which is available at many non-BMW shops. You may want to see if you can get a better deal.

Last I heard BMW oil was Castrol. My F800GS recommends Castrol. Ten bucks is hefty for either Spectro or Castrol.

I have a question. How many oil heads have had engine failures due to oil?

I use regular castroil. I have yet to have an oil failure in any of my bikes in over 37 years of motorcycling.

Let's see: Did you remember to buy a few pounds of BMW factory air to fill your tires, too? I hear Chicago BMW gives you 20% off.
(ducking)

I wish the really good $4/gal gas was still available. My bike really hates this
$2/gal crap everyone is selling now.

I don't think any engine is is going to fail, because of the brand of oil the owner uses. I ran Castroil for years and never had a problem. I have a friend that runs nothing but stock Honda oil in his Goldwing Trike. it now has 87K on it. The main reason I run AMSOIL is its supposed to run cooler and doesn't need changed as often as some other oils. Its expensive, but worth it IMHO.

What steams me is that Walmart no longer stocks Mobil 1 20w50 in the 5 quart bottles!
What's up with that!!
Jeez, just when I thought I had life all figured out.
