Suggestions on a Running Light Switch Location R1100RT

I purchased a set of SuperBright LED running lights for my 1100RT. The wiring harness on/off switch is round and about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. I want to mount this in the panel and am looking at the location to the right of the cigarette lighter socket. There's a few wires in that location running from the emergency light and ABS rocker switches in the back, but I'm pretty sure I can clear them.

Has anyone installed the SuperBright wireness harness and if so, where did you locate the switch? Also, any suggestions on the right size drill bit for the mounting hole? The harness appears to be well made, but doesn't come with any instructions. Thanks.

I cant help much but, I purchased my 03 1150RT as a third owner. Someone installed the PIA driving lights and wired it in so when I push and hold the turn signal cancel button it turns the PIA's on and off. Maybe some one can take it from there technically. There also another website with great info called bmwsporttouring.com

There is nothing magic going on here. First measure the switch - probably the thread section to determine how big a hole to drill. A vernier or dial caliper is useful here. Then stand on your head and make certain you have the space for the switch where you want it. I have no idea where that really is because I have never seen an RT with an OEM cigarette lighter.

Drill the hole. Install the switch. Etc.

By cigarette lighter, I meant the powerlet socket. Showing my age, I guess.

OK - from the photo it looks like there is room if you are careful and make sure exactly where to put it.

You may have a conflict just behind the plastic panel you want to drill thru. The tupperware is off my 99RT so I went and looked, took PGlaves advice and stood on my head. There seems to be a cable connector coming out of the left side of the speedo just under the panel. This is as good as I could get standing on my head with a phone in one hand, small flashlight in the other. Taken thru the speaker mesh (no speakers), looks like a ghost just below your cicarette lighter.

How much penetration does the SBL switch need??

On my '98 R1100RT, I moved the power outlet on the dash to the ridge in the glove box. After awhile, I switched out the OEM power outlet with a North American version (double USB plug inserted). Once the power outlet was removed from the dash, I enlarged the existing hole slightly and installed a switch for the police fan I had installed.

As I recall, there really isn't much room behind the dash and that's why I removed the power outlet. With the power outlet in the glove box, live, I can lock and charge my cell phone either while riding or while sleeping.

Can you not find another but small waterproof switch to put on the dash? Space is really at a premium on that dash.

My PIA lights came with the switch on Velcro on the handle bars. Had the bike since 2009 and 100, 000 km later, the switch has stayed in place.

My setup is a little strange, but it shows a few possible suggestions. The previous owner used the heated grip rocker switch to control the driving lights mounted above the mirrors. When I installed heated grips, i used the controller that came with them and put it in the top center of the dash. The turn signal release switch, previously mentioned in other posts, controls the fork mounted fog lights. Above the two charging ports, I installed the volume control dial for the speakers. Above that is a red led light which shines down on the switches below, although that location has very little clearance on the back side, so the switch would have to be pretty small.

The location worked out well. There were several wires from the rocker switch panel routed above the powerlet socket so they didn't interfere.
