My 86 R80RT twice has made a noise almost like a squeaking noise.as riding.I have a digital volt meter on it. it will jump around three quarters of volt.it will stop making the noise.and then every thing is normal.has anyone had this to happen,

galaxie, I haven't seen anything...no videos by Chris Harris. Snowbum has a page on it, though:

IIRC the minimum length is around 12-13mm. The business end of the brush that rides on the rotor slip rings is curved...the measurement is made to the center of the curve. I was just reading an old email shared on the Airlist that it's possible to purchase the entire brush assembly including the holder and the requirement for soldering is reduced or eliminated. Tom Cutter at rubberchickenracing garage supposed had them...likely others do too. For example, you could check with Rick Jones at Motorrad Elektrick or EuroMotoElectrics.

Here are two write ups on replacing brushes, '73 R75/5 and '77 R100RS, the same process.

I hope this helps.

Best.
