Replacement battery: Any opinions on the Odyssey ODS-AGM16L (PC680) for my ‘02 R1150RT?

OM,

My bike (‘02 RT) is a Non-CANBUS equipped bike. You and the rest of the guys on here have decades more experience than I do with these Oilheads, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there is some kind of special procedure. It leaves me wondering though…what am I missing? I’m not aware of any special procedure. Just plug and play.
I’m not sure on your specific bike how maintenance charging would be accomplished on your bike. I have heard about the “ procedure” to enable charging through the DIN plug- like a cigar plug (charging port in a car).
I did some rootin’ around and found this old thread (now tagged) which has some concise information on how to re-enable that DIN plug to receive maintenance charging-

Too much wondering for me. Having an accessory pigtail lets me confirm yep, I connected it.

HTH

Thanks OM. I truly appreciate you digging that article up for me. I did the same in my search for the answer and found a similar post, but came to the conclusion that I NEVER want to own a CANBUS bike. My gosh! Why do things have to be so complicated? From the dawn of motorcycling up until 2005 from what I gather, motorcyclists from around the globe have managed to charge their batteries without the need for CANBUS. So why on earth is it so prevalent on bikes today? Good grief! Too much unnecessary technology. Truly, my old RT leaves me wanting nothing. Heated grips, electrically adjustable windscreen, detachable hard cases, truly beautiful styling (to my eyes)…it has all that I need. I’ll admit when I was living along the central coast of CA, on those chilly mornings a heated seat would have been nice to have, but that’s not really a need. Now that I’m living in Texas, a heated seat isn’t a thought anymore…but I digress.

Thanks OM, Paul, (both of you), Anton and the rest of you for sharing your wisdom and answering all my questions. You guys are the best!

Addendum to my posts 37 & 39 -
I forgot to say that I use a Yuasa AGM battery; of course I don't have the P/N offhand (YT-19?).
I've lived in different parts of the country, and I've never had a battery last less than 5 years, nor die on me without giving plenty of advance warning. Basic maintenance is so easy and pays off.
(Tangent note - When I was working aerospace/satcomm, Odyssey was the ONLY manufacturer who was actually officially Approved for our backup generators.)
Three friends retired to Hawaii... I've sometimes teased them about why their volcano is still erupting... 🌋

I strongly considered the Yuasa battery which is an exact fit for the factory BMW battery. The exact fit was very important to me. I really didn’t have any desire to mess around with terminal adapters, spacers, etc. However so many of you have had such great results with the Odyssey battery, that I decided to go that route instead. This of course necessitated that I also upgrade from my 22 year old 1.25 AMP Battery Tender because that charger wasn’t going to get it done. Being a fan of the Battery Tender brand and owning SAE extension cords and adapters for it, I was again going to buy a 5 AMP charger from their website. Here again, everyone’s recommendations factored in to my decision and I opted to buy a NOCO Genius 5 AMP charger.

You guys are such an amazing group of people. The advice, tips and support I get from this group of Oilhead experts is unparalleled.

My newest bike is my 2002 K1200RS - the rest are older K-bikes and Airheads, but I use the BMW (DIN) connectors with my NOCO Genius chargers all the time. Those connectors are not switched on any of my bikes and I've not seen any difference in charging performance between using that jack and a direct battery connection.

The NOCO direct battery adapter uses their proprietary connector which has an internal O-ring for moisture sealing and an attached protective cap.

To add-
I have been buying a number of NOCO products including chargers, battery pig-tails and “bulkhead” pass-through A/C connectors. I’ve been satisfied with them all and, NOCO’s packaging is rather impressive.
OM
The NOCO Genius 5-Amp charger I ordered arrived today. Considering that I just ordered it yesterday, which happened to be on a Sunday, I was shocked to find it on my doorstep when I arrived home. Impressive! It arrived in very nice packaging and overall, the charger, adapters, plugs, etc all appear to be a very well made. I also like that the charger comes in a completely sealed case which appears to be quite rugged in design. Now all that I need is for the Odyssey battery to arrive.
