I believe that what happens is a cookie(s) is exchanged between your computer and the server that the forum is on. Then, the next time you navigate to the website, viola, you're already logged on. The cookie is a way for machines to recognize each other or to "resume" a previous connection or setting. Here's a better description of what cookies do:

If you use this feature - which is very convinient - write down your log on information so that if your cookies are cleared or you use a different computer you can log in as yourself.
