R1200GS speed question

When trying to cover long distance on interstates, how fast of a speed can these bikes maintain, single rider, loaded for camping and fishing etc?
Thx.

However fast it's going at 50 rpm under redline in top gear.

On my 1200 ST, I usually run at under 130, where it's smoother. But your 1200 may be a newer version.

The key words in your question were "single rider."

If two-up and over-loaded with gear, the crown bearing doesn't faire well, and you're doomed to an early FD failure.

One-up, you should be able to cruise along at whatever speed below redline that you wish, taking into consideration what speed you're also willing to be cited at. :dance

Let me clarify: how fast will a new (2016 or 2017) R1200GS go? What is top speed? How fast a speed can it maintain? 150 km/h (90 mph) sustained, sound possible? Now, with that in mind, what is corresponding fuel flow / range?
Thanks again. I'm considering this model. Also considering the KTM 1290.

The new GS isn't a tiddler bike. It is a modern 1200 with sophisticated fuel injection. Even my 23 year old 750 with antique fuel injection (K75) will do that all day and get almost 40 mpg or 180 to 200 mile range.

There's a funny article that Darwin Holmstrom wrote some years ago. He was test riding a Buell and somewhere in Montana met up with a group of BMW riders. He wrote that they were running at about 100 mph and he just tagged along.

At the end of the day, the Buell had a broken engine mount (or something) and was "puking gas all over it's rear cylinder" (IIRC). But the BMW's, he observed, "hadn't even broken a sweat".

Wheres the red line on the tach? How much under are you at 100 mph?
Thanks guys.

Top speed is listed several places as 137 mph. So, 100 mph would be turning at 73% of redline. Redline is 8500 rpm so at 100 mph in top gear the engine would be turning only 6200 rpm. Loafing!

Give or take a couple of points for guesstimation, that's impressive!

Not guestimation at all. Just some research. The specifications say top speed of 137 and redline of 8500. Easy to look up. Then a little arithmetic: nothing a pencil and paper couldn't suffice for but I did cheat and use a calculator.

The only real guess is whether the top speed is reached at redline of 8500 or at peak horsepower of 7900 rpm. If the latter, then the rpm at 100 mph would be just a measely 5767 rpm. That seemed low so I assumed top speed is at top gear redline. In any case the rpm at 100 mph in top gear would be no more than the original 6200 figure.

Yes. All good. No need to split hairs. Next question is: how much do these bikes "buzz" while making time at 100 mph?

There is a chance that you will find above 90mph, things are happening pretty fast.......and it's more rider than bike. Of course iffin' you do get near redline you may go
PLAID <clicky

I had my R1150RS up to 100 mph once, and the front end just felt a bit light. That was for just a few seconds. :D I was following a C6, and the driver was playing with me.... :D

There was one Forum member, I think the fellow who previously owned San Jose BMW, who took a stock R1200ST to Bonneville and got runs of 151 m.p.h. and 153 m.p.h. out of it.

Easy riding R1200GS at speed.....

I'm not slow and not fast. My wife says I'm half-fast.

I can cruise all day long at 90MPH with never a worry, not burning oil, just motoring. Very little vibration, and the bike just settles down at around 80 or so and is very stable. The only thing to watch for is a heavy, gusty, cross wind, which makes me slow down and pay close attention. I usually run Metzler Tourance for reference. I had a 2001 R1150GS, and now a 2010 R1200GS, which could both hold any speed I could. From what I hear the new GS's make some nice time by comparison.

All the best, and safe riding to all.

Thanks John. Pending the sale of my R1100RT, this decision is coming down to the R1200GS or the KTM 1290. Ducati looks interesting too. Might have to take a look at least. This category of bike has really become popular and it seems every manufacturer has an offering.

how fast will a new (2016 or 2017) R1200GS go? What is top speed?.

Top speed of a 2016 R1200RS is 140 MPH +-1 or 2 depending on wind direction and road grade.
The reported speeds were GPS speeds.
The GS has the same engine but the gearing may be slightly different.

Overall gearing determines if an engine will pull red line in top gear. A lot of resistance to overcome when travelling near max speed and the GS is not exactly a dart shape.

When you are asking about overall top speed you also have to consider if you are going to do this with bags, trunk etc. in place. If that is the case then your top speed is going to be considerably less due mostly to the effect of the wind on the bikes handling. With all the gear on the bike, it becomes like a big sheet of plywood you are pushing down the road, and very susceptible to changes in wind direction.

If you are comparing bikes based on top speed, then I wouldn't pick a GS in the BMW line, if speed is your thing there are more capable mounts in the BMW family.
