I am contemplating the purchase of a 1998 R1100RT-P with 30,000 miles. Can anyone tell me of any problems with that model, and also, any advantages? I will appreciate any information.;)

Well, I suppose you know that "-P" means it's an ex-Police bike.

Biggest problem might be lack of passenger seat and perhaps passenger footpegs.

OTOH, you'll get a more accurate speedo and a different fairing mount permitting mounting aux lighting.

And, if you're really lucky, you'll get wire instead of cast wheels.

police bike

I am the lucky winner of the r1100rt/p that was given away at the west virginia rally. It's also a 1998 and had about 40 k on the clock. It was purchased by MOA from A&S out in california and suposedly was used by a police superviser thus the low milage.
I had been told by numerous people that these bikes were very well serviced and ones pulled out of service would go over an extensive checklist before being offered to the civilian public.
Cosmeticaly my bike looked very sharp.Hardly a blamish on it for it's use over the years. For piece of mind I changed all the fluids. To my amazement I found the drain plug magnet on the tranny full of metal shavings,I mean not just a little bit,the whole thing was covered. The oil probably was never changed.I have changed the oil now 4 times in the 8 k and finaly see no more metal on the magnet.Bike shifted harsh in the beginning
but has smoothened out a lot.Ended up useing syn. 75-140 bmw.
Then found the back wheel loose.Could move the wheel and final drive from side to side about a 1/8 inch. The pivot needle bearings had never been serviced.
So watch out !!!!!

I almost bought a P bike until I researched them. From what I learned, if you get one that was assigned to one officer he PROBABLY took care of it. If you get one from the motor pool, you have the possibility of any of the bike cops riding it and who knows where. Over curbs, letting them sit at idle at for long periods. Then comes the servicing part. Some municipalities don't have it in their budget to maintain the bike properly. They "make do" with service. I read that the California Highway Patrol did take care of their bikes. Other than that, I would watch out. I lost 500.00 because of down payment before I read the horror stories. But do what you want.

Well as far as advantages go....people will undoubtedly slow down and pull over to the shoulder when they see you in their rearview mirror. :thumb
