Parking at Motels/Hotels

Won't always go that well - there will be times the answer is NO. But it pays to ask.

Hope you expand your touring to many nights on the road. Great way to see the USA! :thumb

Yeah, fully expected the lady to say no, but she didn't so all the better.

Already have a few more road trips planned on the bike this summer. Assuming work cooperates anyway :)

I know two people who've had their trucks and enclosed trailers stolen from hotel lots over night. Assuming they asked permission first, this may not be any more unreasonable than parking a bike under the awning.

Except that the rig occupied 3/4 of the space available and essentially blocked typical drive-thru access for people checking in... which is the true intent of the awning. No comparison to a bike parked off to the side.

Sucks how work gets in the way of enjoying our bikes! :banghead

But hey - provides the cash that puts the 'fun' in funding trips.

Really glad I could retire at age 53. That has since resulted in another 145,000+ miles on two wheels, so I've tried to use the time wisely. :dance

The desk clerk told us that there was severe weather forecast and invited us to park the bikes in the drive through for the night.

One time in Texas the desk clerk called our room and said a severe storm would hit soon and asked if Debbie and wanted to park our bikes in the lobby.
I went outside and saw the bikes would be protected from the wind where they were and did not move them.
I thanked the employee for the offer.

No, but almost the same result as the Indian in the photo that started the discussion. I wasn't there, but if I imagine somebody pulling in with a $50k bass boat on the trailer at a hotel where the staff knows there have been thefts in the lot, maybe they could have even suggested that the owner park it there. I wasn't there and obviously am clearly just speculating. Maybe it was completely rude and the boat owner just left it there without permission. I have no idea of the circumstances around what you saw. I can just imagine a situation where it might be justified.

During this conversation/debate?...I've seen no mention of our cars/trucks, and the like. Just as expensive [if not more-so] than our motorcycles. And I'm sure in some cases just as adored as any motorcycle. What would happen if every auto/truck driver staying at a hotel/motel attempted to park under the 'awning' ?....{A}...... it would get pretty crowded :dunno & just be ridiculous. That area has a purpose, check in / check out......IMO that should be observed.

Then there is the fire lane issue...sometimes marked as such, but not always.

Why should we not just park in the provided lot?....and roll the dice like every other guest ?

Do we really need to / want too create anymore animosity toward ourselves? the motorcycling public in general??

Annie once rode across South Dakota and was caught in a wind/dust storm. She stopped at a motel and the manager told her to park her bike in the lobby, then helped her roll it in.

This is the worst overnight parking job I have ever seen in front of a hotel/ motel. 6pm till 8am plus the next morning. Don't know any details, but desk persons were utterly amazed.

Squarely on the hotel. They need to contact the owner and have them move it. If not, they move it themselves. Tow truck if necessary.

Once when checking in, the clerk said they were expecting large hail and told us to park on the front porch.

That!...was extremely kind of them.....However, fire code / insurance...? Very likely it is against fire code...and if code is not observed ? I have heard of cases where insurance claim is denied.

They [inn keepers] took a chance.

We were not blocking a door, but we did block the window.
It's not unusual to park in front of a window.

Look like a great place to park

It's out of the weather, has a place to store your bags and hang your gear. Hey, he left plenty of room for other bikes to park or either go around. :dance
