Depends on the bike and the stand but I had one on my R1100S and I could do it no sweat. I still have the stand actually, I was never able to sell it.
 
i use pit bull stands for my HP2 in the garage.

got a front and a rear for less than the official bmw stand, which only supports the middle.

the bike pops right up on them.

mind you, it only weighs 425 lbs or so.

One person very definitely can get a bike up on stands...it is a good idea to practice with an assistant until you get a feel for the process...DAMHIK. ;)
