Oil Filter

Dave_Faria

Slow & Easy
GE list. I went to my local dealer yesterday to buy an oil filter for my 1978 R80/7. They now only come with the 2 piece filter with all the gaskets. The price of the kit is $20. I have plenty of gaskets and "O" rings. I prefer the one piece filter and don't want to pay $20 for what I don't want or need. I know Purlator use to make the one piece filter but, I don't have a part number. Does anyone know the Purlator part # or can suggest another manufacturer??? I tried calling Catapillar generator and hydraulic because they have a large number of oil filters - no luck.

Thanks for any help

I believe NAPA makes something as well...

My 0.02...I wouldn't take a chance with anything other than a BMW filter. I don't have all the o-rings/gaskets/shims so I need them. Supposedly the long straight filter is no longer available but I can still get it. The hinged filter seems fiddly but seems to work OK.

Read up around the web and make a decision on what to use...

I use Fram;

CH6061 is the Fram # and my R100/7 has no issue with this one. Its a no hinge, standard straight filter @ 10$ in CA., from my local auto parts guy. I used Baldwin Filters too, years ago. They are located in the mid west somewhere around Nebraska, I think. Good luck, Randy:thumb

You can still get the one piece non-oil cooler filter from the dealerships. I did just a few weeks ago. You can also get the o-rings and shims separately as well. Look up the pn's yourself and order them yourself if you need to.

I would NOT use Puralator Filters. the last time I looked at them they were too short and did not seal properly.

For my "O" rings I usually buy one new from BMW take it to an industrial seal distributor and they match it up both in size and correct material. I get the "O" rings usually for $0.50 or less.
