Need your help - Tell me about BBQ from Austin to Savannah

fellow BMW enthusiasts,

i am headed out for a leisurely trip from austin to savannah, and back. my goal is to eat barbecue for EVERY meal while i'm on the bike. i need your help finding good place along the way.

i will be mixing up the riding as i go. some of it is LD Rider-esque slab, and some of it is carefree screwing around on two lane country roads.

but all of it needs to be barbecue.

that's where you come in. i need you to help me find great barbecue places between these two locations. personal recommendations and photos of the food from past visits are awarded extra credit. places that are reached via scenic roads are eligible for hall of fame status.

i am not picky - i like fancy high end places. i like medium sized meat markets where people go after church on sunday. i like small, dirty, restaurants that as i roll up into their parking lots (ideally it's gravel with tons of ruts, pickup trucks, and dogs laying around) and when i take a whiff of the air coming out of their smokers, i salivate profusely. my fellow southerners know what i'm talking about. heck, i'm salivating just *thinking* about the places you guys are going to recommend.

here are a few examples of other delicious meals i've had in the past, to get your taste buds and neurons firing.

In Alabama you have so many choices you can't go wrong.
1.Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa,Al
2.Jim & Nicks several locations in Birmingham,one in Destin,Fl
3.Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur,Al
4.Fat Man's BBQ near Pell City
5.Blue Moon BBQ several location's in Birmingham
6.Great place (can't think of the name)off the Garden City exit on I65 NB near Cullman.
Now that I have stared something, lets see who else has a good place.#4 and #6
meet your requirements about gravel parking lots and pickups..If your travels take you to Memphis try the Interstate BBQ.Have Fun.

There are a lot of high end & famous places in Austin. My bro lives there & took me to an up & coming place that was far & beyond anything I've had before. They do great brisket, ribs, pork, etc... As for sauce, they have an espresso BBQ sauce that is nifty. The place is called Franklin's BBQ & he operates out of a little trailer on a lot, with places to sit, etc. A line forms about a half hour before opening & he usually sells out every day.

Hey Lee, good to see you :wave. Can't help you with finding good BBQ but have a great trip and please post a ride report about what you find :eat.

A few years ago we while visiting Austin, we went to a place called the Salt Lick. I dream of going back there some day!

If you hit Memphis you will have it all. Rendevous for dry ribs, Corkys for anything and enjoy their onion loaf, Gridleys and make sure you get their beans.

What is your main route?

East, going to Savannah. Not much farther north than I-20.

West, back to Austin, I'll probably ride back the same way, but then jump off and ride the Natchez trace south, then futz around in Louisiana and east Texas.

But I can detour for something special.

Good stuff, eh? I've eaten there a bunch.

And franklins is great, but it's getting better known. The line forms up early, and they run out!

Apparently Gridleys does not have a web site. But I found something with an address and that site is right up your alley anyway. I went to college in Memphis and I really miss all three of those places. Quite frankly all the BBQ in Memphis is pretty good. They have the BBQ cooking championship in May each year so the city has a rep on the this stuff. All this has made me hungry for BBQ and NW Indiana is not exactly the BBQ haven of the Midwest. Perhaps I have an objective for the upcoming 70 degree weekend. Now to start a thread on Indiana BBQ.

But of course. I haven't taken a report-worthy trip in a long time, but this one should have a few meals worth photographing.

Heck, maybe i will even take a few photos of the bike or the scenery! ;)

There is a place in IILANO, TX (cannot remember the name) but the BBQ was delicious. You point out what you want and they cut off as much as you think you can eat. Ride Safe :usa :usa: eat :eat :drink
